1895 College Football All-America Team
The 1895 College Football All-America team is composed of college football players who were selected as All-Americans for the 1895 college football season, as selected by Caspar Whitney for ''Harper's Weekly'' and the Walter Camp Football Foundation. Whitney began publishing his All-America Team in 1889, and his list, which was considered the official All-America Team, was published in ''Harper's Weekly'' from 1891 to 1896. College Football All-America Team
The College Football All-America Team is an honor given annually to the best college football players in the United States at their respective positions. The original use of the term ''All-America'' seems to have been to the 1889 College Football All-America Team selected by Caspar Whitney and published in ''This Week's Sports''. Football pioneer Walter Camp also began selecting All-America teams in the 1890s and was recognized as the official selector in the early years of the 20th century. Sam Thorne
Samuel Brinckerhoff "Brinck" Thorne (September 19, 1873 – June 3, 1930) was an American football player and coach. He played college football at Yale University as halfback from 1893 to 1894. As a senior and team captain in 1895, Thorn was named an All-American. He returned to Yale in 1896 to serve as head football coach for a season, during which he guided the Bulldogs to a 13–1 record. Clinton Randolph Wyckoff (September 4, 1874 – August 16, 1947) was an American college football player, and the first consensus All-American not from Yale, Harvard, Princeton or Penn. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1970. Wyckoff was born in Elmira, New York and attended Elmira Free Academy. He then attended Cornell University, just to Elmira's north, where he was graduated in 1896. At Cornell he was captain of the football team immediately succeeding the Pop Warner. Dudley Riggs (American Football)
Thomas Dudley Riggs (January 28, 1875 – May 22, 1913) was an All-American football player. He played for Princeton University and was selected as an All-American in 1895. Early years Riggs was the son of Lawrason Riggs, a well-known banker of Baltimore, Maryland. The family had founded and operated Riggs Bank, which financed Samuel Morse's invention of the telegraph in 1845 and lent $16 million to the United States to fund the Mexican–American War. Riggs received his elementary training in a Baltimore private school and later attended St. Paul's School, a private preparatory school in Concord, New Hampshire. Charles Wharton (American Football)
Charles M. "Buck" Wharton (1868 – November 14, 1949) was an American football player. He was selected as an All-American guard in 1896 while playing for the University of Pennsylvania. The Penn teams of 1894 and 1895, with Wharton and fellow Hall of Fame inductee, Charlie Gelbert, as the guards were undefeated both years and won back-to-back national championships. In the College Football Hall of Fame biography of Wharton, the 6-foot, 3-inch guard was called "a blocking dynamo, often taking out entire sides of an enemy line in the style of an axe-swinging Paul Bunyan." Dudley Riggs (January 18, 1932 – September 22, 2020) was an improvisational comedian who created the Instant Theater Company in New York, which later moved to Minneapolis to become the Brave New Workshop comedy troupe. Family and early career Riggs was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and joined the circus when he was five years old. His family performed in a variety of acts with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus where he learned comedy in the vaudeville style. He worked as a circus aerialist, comedy acrobat, and clown. Later, he formed a group that toured the country during winters when the circus was not operating. Audiences at shows put on by the troupe were often quite hostile toward the performers. Langdon Lea
Langdon "Biffy" Lea (May 11, 1874 – October 10, 1937) was an American football player and coach. He played college football at Princeton University, where he was selected as a first-team College Football All-America Team, All-American at Tackle (gridiron football position), tackle three consecutive years, in 1893, 1894, and 1895. He later served as head football coach at the University of Michigan in 1900 and at Princeton in 1901. Lea was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1964. 1895 College Football Season
The 1895 college football season was the season of American football played among colleges and universities in the United States during the 1895–96 academic year. The 1895 Penn Quakers football team, led by head coach George Washington Woodruff, compiled a perfect 14–0 record and is recognized as the 1895 national champion by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation, Houlgate System, and National Championship Foundation. One selector, Parke H. Davis, recognized both Penn and Yale as co-national champions. Yale compiled a 13–0–2 record. In the Midwest, Michigan led the way with an 8–1 record, the only loss coming in a road game against Harvard. In the South, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association played its first year of college football with Vanderbilt winning the first conference championship.
