Carl Nielsen
Carl August Nielsen (; 9 June 1865 – 3 October 1931) was a Danish composer, conductor and violinist, widely recognized as his country's most prominent composer. Brought up by poor yet musically talented parents on the island of Funen, he demonstrated his musical abilities at an early age. He initially played in a military band before attending the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen from 1884 until December 1886. He premiered his Op. 1, '' Suite for Strings'', in 1888, at the age of 23. The following year, Nielsen began a 16-year stint as a second violinist in the Royal Danish Orchestra under the conductor Johan Svendsen, during which he played in Giuseppe Verdi's ''Falstaff'' and '' Otello'' at their Danish premieres. In 1916, he took a post teaching at the Royal Danish Academy and continued to work there until his death. Mathilde Elisabeth "Lis" Ahlmann (April 13, 1894 – January 15, 1979) was a Danish weaver and textile designer who was one of the founders of modern Danish textile art and influential in the development of the style known as Danish modern. Biography Born in Aarhus, Denmark, she trained with weaving master Gerda Henning, completing her apprenticeship in 1929. She also studied painting with Harad Giersing and worked for a time as a china painter for Kähler Keramik. She traveled around Europe for further studies. She opened her own workshop in 1934, and during that decade worked with furniture designer Kaare Klint, most notably designing the hand-woven fabrics for his famous ''Circle Bed'' (Kugleseng). By 1938 she had begun to exhibit her textiles, and she became known for a strongly geometric style featuring stripes and checks, initially in earth tones. Østerbros Boldklub (also known as ØB) was a Danish sports club based in the Østerbro area of Copenhagen, active from 1894 to 1998. The club is best known for its amateur football team.
