The 1894 Kansas Jayhawks football team represented the University of Kansas in the Western Interstate University Football Association (WIUFA) during the 1894 college football season. In their first season under head coach Hector Cowan, the Jayhawks compiled a 2–3–1 record (1–2 against conference opponents), finished third in the conference, and were outscored by all opponents by a combined total of 82 to 78. The Jayhawks played their home games at McCook Field in Lawrence, Kansas. O. K. Williamson was the team captain. Western Interstate University Football Association
The Western Interstate University Football Association (WIUFA) was one of the first intercollegiate Conference (sports), athletic conferences in the United States, existing from 1892 to 1897. Formation, history and evolution The football teams from the Universities of University of Iowa, Iowa, University of Kansas, Kansas, University of Missouri, Missouri, and University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Nebraska formed the conference and competed against each other annually. Early WIUFA play led to the transition of the famous Border War (Kansas–Missouri rivalry), rivalry between Kansas and Missouri to the football field as many of the fans and some of the first players on both teams were the sons of men who had fought each other on either side of the conflict in Bleeding Kansas and later the American Civil War, Civil War. Hector Cowan
Hector William "Hec" Cowan (July 12, 1863 – October 19, 1941) was an American football player and coach, and an ordained Presbyterian minister. He played college football at Princeton University from 1885 to 1889. He was team captain for Princeton and selected to the first College Football All-America Team in 1889. Cowan served as the head football coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for two games during the 1888 season and at the University of Kansas from 1894 to 1896, compiling a career coaching record of 18–8–1. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1951. Playing career Cowan played football for the Princeton Tigers from 1885 to 1889. While at Princeton, he had several games against Pudge Heffelfinger of Yale who said Cowan had "the strongest shoulders and arms I've ever been up against and his stubby legs drove like pistons when he carried the ball..." McCook Field (stadium)
McCook Field was a stadium in Lawrence, Kansas. It hosted the University of Kansas Jayhawks football team until they moved to Memorial Stadium in 1921. The stadium held 15,000 people at its peak and was opened in 1892. The stadium was financed by John James McCook. The Jayhawks current stadium, David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, was built at the site of McCook Field. History and home field advantage Kansas enjoyed much success in the years they played at McCook. In the 29 seasons at McCook, they compiled a home record of 101-23-8. Multiple coaching legends coached the Jayhawks during their tenure at McCook included Fielding Yost, who won 6 national championships at Michigan. The 1894 college football season was the season of American football played among colleges and universities in the United States during the 1894–95 academic year. The 1894 Yale Bulldogs football team compiled a perfect 16–0 record, outscored opponents by a total of 485 to 13, and has been recognized as the national champion by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation, and National Championship Foundation, and as co-champion by Parke H. Davis. Penn also compiled a perfect record (12–0) and was recognized as the co-national champion by Parke H. Davis.
