John Lombard
John Edward Lombard (December 17, 1872 – December 4, 1948) was an American college football coach and player, professor, education official, and engineer. He served as the head coach of the Tulane University football team in 1898. Lombard attended Tulane University, where he organized the school's first football team and served as its captain. Biography Lombard was born on Dec. 17, 1872 in New Iberia, Iberia Parish, Louisiana the son of Edward Homer Lombard and Laura Virginia Levy. He attended Tulane University, where he organized and played on the first football team. He served as the team captain, and in the game against Louisiana State, another first-year program, he faced Ruffin Pleasant, LSU captain and future Louisiana governor. Crescent City Base Ball Park, originally known as Sportsman's Park (1886–1887), was a sports stadium in New Orleans from 1886 to 1900. The stadium was renamed Crescent City Base Ball Park in 1888 and reopened on February 9, 1888. The ball park was located at City Park Avenue and what is now the Pontchartrain Expressway across from Greenwood Cemetery. The 1893 college football season was the season of American football played among colleges and universities in the United States during the 1893–94 academic year. The 1893 Princeton Tigers football team, led by captain Thomas Trenchard, compiled a perfect 11–0 record, outscored opponents by a total of 270 to 14, and has been recognized as the national champion by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation, Houlgate System, and National Championship Foundation. Despite Yale's loss to Princeton, one selector ( Parke H. Davis) recognized the Bulldogs as the national champion. 1893 LSU Football Team
The 1893 LSU football team represented Louisiana State University (LSU) during the 1893 college football season. This was the first year that LSU sponsored a football team. The Tigers were coached by university professor Dr Charles E. Coates against in-state school Tulane of New Orleans. The game sparked a rivalry between the Tigers and the Green Wave that has lasted generations. Future Louisiana governor Ruffin G. Pleasant was the quarterback and captain of the LSU team. In the first game against Tulane, LSU football players wore purple and gold ribbons on their uniforms. According to legend, purple and gold were chosen because they were Mardi Gras colors, and the green of Mardi Gras was sold out. An LSU baseball team had also worn purple and gold in its first varsity game against Tulane earlier in 1893, even though LSU's official colors at the time were actually blue and white. The Battle for the Rag is the name given to the LSU–Tulane football rivalry. It is an American college football rivalry game played by the LSU Tigers football team of Louisiana State University and the Tulane Green Wave football team of Tulane University. The game was played nearly every year since its inception in 1893, with the last of ninety-eight games being played in 2009. Tulane and LSU spent much of their athletic histories as members of the same conference: the SIAA from 1899 to 1920, the Southern Conference from 1922 to 1932, and as charter members of the SEC from 1932 to 1966. The "Rag" The winner is awarded a satin trophy flag known as the Tiger Rag at LSU and the Victory Flag at Tulane.
