1890 Cardiff County Borough Council Election
The 1890 Cardiff County Borough Council election was held on Saturday 1 November 1890 to elect councillors to Cardiff County Borough Council in Cardiff, Wales. These were the second all-Cardiff elections since the creation of the county borough. They were first to take place since the increase in number of electoral wards from four to ten. Background Cardiff had become a county borough on 1 April 1889 as a result of the Local Government Act 1888. With its municipal year running from November, the November 1889 elections were the first all-Cardiff elections in the town since becoming a county borough. In July 1890 the town's ward boundaries were redrawn, increasing the number of electoral wards from five to ten. Cardiff County Borough Council
Cardiff County Borough Council, known as Cardiff City Council after Cardiff achieved city status in 1905, was the elected local authority that administered the town (later city) and county borough of Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales between 1889 and 1974. The county borough council was replaced in 1974 by a district council, covering part of South Glamorgan and also known as Cardiff City Council. Background Cardiff had become a fully self-governing borough in 1835, with a new council becoming effective from 1 January 1836 (though it did not acquire a full-time salaried clerk until 1884). Central (Cardiff Electoral Ward)
Central was the name of an original electoral ward in the centre of the county borough and, from 1905, city of Cardiff, Wales. It elected representatives to the Cardiff County Borough Council and, from 1974, South Glamorgan County Council. The ward ceased to exist in 1996. Morgan Morgan (Welsh Politician)
Sir Morgan Morgan (1843–1894) was a solicitor who became mayor of Cardiff, Wales, in 1886. He was also Chief Magistrate of the town. Background Morgan was born in north Carmarthenshire on 18 July 1843, to Morgan Morgan, a farmer of Cilycwm. He was brought up by his uncle, a banker in Brecon, with his brother John (who became High Sheriff of Brecknockshire and Mayor of Brecon). Morgan attended the Priory School in Abergavenny, followed by Christ College in Brecon. Choosing to become a solicitor, he was articled in Cardiff after moving there in 1861. Splott is the name of an electoral ward in the south of Cardiff, capital city of Wales. It covers the communities of Splott and Tremorfa (which was created from the northeastern part of Splott in 2016). Description The Splott ward is bordered to the north by the Penylan and Rumney wards, to the northwest by Adamsdown, to the southwest by the Butetown ward. To the southeast is the Severn Estuary. South was the name of an original electoral ward in the south of the town and (from 1905) city of Cardiff, Wales.
