The 1889 World Championship was an exhibition football match that took place in Glasgow, Scotland, on 3 October 1889 between the winners of the Scottish Cup, Third Lanark (then known as 3rd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers), and the English Double winners of the Football League and FA Cup, Preston North End. The Football World Championship, also known as the United Kingdom Championship or the International Club Championship, was a exhibition association football match played between the English and Scottish club champions on a regular, but not annual, basis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with varying degrees of press attention and public interest. Perhaps the most widely publicised at the time under the 'World Championship' name was the 1888 event between Renton and West Bromwich Albion, while in the modern age interest from historians has drawn more attention to matches involving Sunderland, particularly the 1895 match. Scottish Football League
The Scottish Football League (SFL) was a league featuring professional and semi-professional football clubs mostly from Scotland.One club, Berwick Rangers, is based in the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, which is located approximately 4 km south of the Anglo-Scottish border. From its foundation in 1890 until the breakaway Scottish Premier League (SPL) was formed in 1998, the SFL was the top level of football in Scotland. After 1998, the SFL represented levels 2 to 4 of the Scottish football league system. In June 2013, the SFL merged with the SPL to form the Scottish Professional Football League. Robert Scott (footballer, Born 1870)
Robert Scott (born 2 October 1870, date of death unknown) was a professional footballer who played for Scotland against Ireland in the 1893–94 British Home Championship. Scott was born in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire. Career Scott played for Airdrieonians for around ten years from 1888. During his time at the club, the "Diamonds" joined Division Two of the Scottish League in 1894. Scott also had a one-match loan to Celtic on 29 April 1893. Scott was appearing in place of Mick Mulvey, and helped Celtic secure a 3–0 victory over Rangers, which ultimately led Celtic to win their first league title. He suffered a broken leg just before the turn of the century which effectively ended his playing career. Scott made one appearance for Scotland, a 2–1 victory over Ireland on 31 March 1894, during the 1893–94 British Home Championship. Playing style Scott was noted for his "fierce low shots". The 1888–89 Scottish Cup was the 16th season of Scotland's most prestigious football knockout competition. 3rd Lanark RV beat Glasgow rivals Celtic (making their Cup début) 2–1 in a replayed final.
