The 1886 Massachusetts gubernatorial election was held on November 2, 1886. Incumbent Republican Party (United States), Republican Governor George D. Robinson did not run for re-election to a fourth term in office. He was succeeded by his Lt. Governor Oliver Ames (governor), Oliver Ames, who defeated Democratic former State Senator John F. Andrew. Oliver Ames (governor)
Oliver Ames (February 4, 1831 – October 22, 1895) was an American businessman, investor, philanthropist, and Republican politician who served as the 35th Governor of Massachusetts from 1887 to 1890. Ames's public life was primarily devoted to the vindication of his late father Oakes Ames, a businessman and U.S. Representative who was censured for his role the 1873 Credit Mobilier scandal and died shortly thereafter. His tenure in office was also marked by a divide within the state over the growing temperance movement. Ames was executor of his father's estate, and took over many of his business interests. He was a major philanthropist, especially in his hometown of Easton, where he secured construction of a number of architecturally significant works by the architect H.H. Richardson and a number of properties by landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted. John Forrester Andrew (November 26, 1850 – May 30, 1895) was a United States representative from Massachusetts. He was born to John Albion Andrew and Eliza Jane (Hersey) Andrew in Hingham, Massachusetts, Hingham on November 26, 1850. He attended private schools, including Phillips Academy, Phillips School and Brooks School. He graduated from Harvard University in 1872 and from Harvard Law School in 1875. He was admitted to the Suffolk bar and commenced practice in Boston, Massachusetts, Boston. The Republican Party, also referred to as the GOP ("Grand Old Party"), is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States.
