1885 Wimbledon Championships
The 1885 Wimbledon Championships took place on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. Wimbledon, London
Wimbledon () is a district and town of Southwest London, England, southwest of the centre of London at Charing Cross; it is the main commercial centre of the London Borough of Merton. Wimbledon had a population of 68,187 in 2011 which includes the electoral wards of Abbey, Dundonald, Hillside, Trinity, Village, Raynes Park and Wimbledon Park. It is home to the Wimbledon Championships and New Wimbledon Theatre, and contains Wimbledon Common, one of the largest areas of common land in London. Blanche Bingley
Blanche Bingley Hillyard (née Bingley; 3 November 1863 – 6 August 1946) was an English tennis player. She won six singles Wimbledon championships (1886, 1889, 1894, 1897, 1898, 1900) and was runner up seven times, having also competed in the first ever Wimbledon championships for women in 1884. She also won the Irish championships three times (1888, 1894, 1897); the German championship twice (1897, 1900); and the South of England Championships at Eastbourne, 11 times between 1885 and 1905. Early life Bingley was born in Greenford, west London, the daughter of a wealthy tailoring business proprietor. She was a member of the Ealing Lawn Tennis & Archery Club. Arthur Stanley (tennis)
Arthur John Stanley (26 June 1853 – 16 July 1935) was an English sportsman and stockbroker. An association footballer, he was member of Clapham Rovers F.C., for whom he played as an outside-forward. He also played both singles and doubles tennis at Wimbledon. Biography Stanley was the son of Charles Stanley, of 38 Warwick Road, Maida Hill, London. He was born at Paddington, London, and educated at Repton and Trinity College, Cambridge. Stanley made one appearance for Wanderers, scoring the only goal in a 1–0 victory over Westminster School on 21 November 1877. He was later a member of the Clapham Rovers team that reached the FA Cup final twice, losing 1–0 to Old Etonians in 1879, going on to win the cup in 1880 with a 1–0 win over Oxford University at The Kennington Oval. Claude Farrer
Claude Erskine Farrer (15 September 1864 – 16 February 1890) was an English tennis player. He was the second son and third child of four of Thomas Farrer, 1st Baron Farrer (who was raised to the peerage but only in 1893 after Claude's death, so Claude was not styled "the Honourable") and his wife Frances Erskine (1825–1870), daughter of the historian and orientalist William Erskine (historian), William Erskine (1773–1852) and his wife Maitland Mackintosh daughter of James Mackintosh by his first wife. His elder sister was Ida Darwin, his elder brother was Thomas Farrer, 2nd Baron Farrer, his younger brother was Noel Farrer, the civil servant. He was educated at Eton College, Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He played singles at Wimbledon in 1882 and 1886 but lost in the first round to Ernest Browne (6–0, 6–2, 6–0) in 1882 and Edward J. Avory (6–3, 6–2, 6–2) in 1886. The Championships, Wimbledon
The Wimbledon Championships, commonly known simply as Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is widely regarded as the most prestigious. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877 and is played on outdoor grass courts, with retractable roofs over the two main courts since 2019. Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open. Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass, the traditional tennis playing surface. Also, it is the only Grand Slam that retains a night-time curfew, though matches can now continue until 11.00 pm under the lights. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, also known as the All England Club, based at Church Road, Wimbledon, London, Wimbledon, London, England, is a Gentlemen's club, private members' club.
