1884 Birthday Honours
The 1884 Birthday Honours were appointments by Queen Victoria to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of the British Empire. The appointments were made to celebrate the official birthday of the Queen, and were published in ''The London Gazette'' in May and June 1884. The recipients of honours are displayed here as they were styled before their new honour, and arranged by honour, with classes (Knight, Knight Grand Cross, ''etc.'') and then divisions (Military, Civil, ''etc.'') as appropriate. Queen Victoria
Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria; 24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until Death and state funeral of Queen Victoria, her death in 1901. George Willes
Admiral Sir George Ommanney Willes (19 June 1823 – 18 February 1901) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth. Early life Born at Hythe, Hampshire in 1823, Willes was the son of Captain George Willes, RN, by his wife Anne Lacon, daughter of Sir Edmund Lacon, Baronet. He was educated at the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth, and joined the Royal Navy in 1838. Naval career Willes received his commission as Mate in 1842, and as Lieutenant in 1844, his early career being uneventful until the outbreak of the Crimean War, when he took part in the bombardment of Odessa and of at Sevastopol in 1854. In April that year he was promoted Commander, and in May 1856 Captain. He was given command of the frigate HMS ''Chesapeake'' in 1859, and of HMS ''Impérieuse'' in 1861. Chamarajendra Wadiyar X
Chamarajendra Wadiyar X (22 February 1863 – 28 December 1894) was the twenty-third Maharaja of Mysore between 1868 and 1894. Adoption and accession Chamarajendra Wadiyar X was born in the old palace in Mysore on 22 February 1863, as the third son of Sardar Chikka Krishnaraj Urs of the Bettada-Kote branch of the ruling clan. His father died about a week before his birth. His mother, Rajkumari Putammani Devi, was the eldest daughter of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar III. Following the failure of heirs male, Krishnaraja Wadiyar III decided to adopt Chamarajendra. The adoption was done on 18 June 1865 and was recognised by the British Government of India on 16 April 1867. Francis Mowatt
Sir Francis Mowatt (28 April 1837 – 20 November 1919) was a British civil servant. He was a radical and Liberal civil servant at the Head of the Treasury. His influence was felt at a time of expansion in governmental activities. Personal life Mowatt was born in Sydney, Australia on 28 April 1837. His father Francis Mowatt (1803–1891) was an MP from Falmouth. His wife Sarah Sophia was the daughter of Captain George Barnes of Romford. Barnes was part of the marine services of the British East India Company. Mowatt's sister was married to Vernon Lushington, a permanent secretary to the Admiralty. Early career Mowat was educated at Harrow (1851–53) and Winchester, before going on to St John's College, Oxford (1855–56). He was a Treasury Clerkship scholar. John Charles Ardagh
Major-General Sir John Charles Ardagh (9 August 1840 – 30 September 1907), was an Anglo-Irish officer of the British Army, who served as a military engineer, surveyor, intelligence officer, and colonial administrator. Biography Early life and education Ardagh was the second son of William Johnson Ardagh (1798-1872), vicar of Rossmire, County Waterford, and Sarah Cobbold, of Ipswich. Francis Clery
Major-General Sir Cornelius Francis Clery (13 February 1838 – 25 June 1926) was a British Army officer who took part in the Anglo-Zulu War and later commanded the 2nd Division during the Second Boer War. Early life Cornelius Frances Clery was born in 2 Sidney Place, Cork, Ireland on 13 February 1838. He was educated at Clongowes Wood College in County Kildare. John Davis (British Army Officer)
Major-General Sir John Davis (27 April 1832 – 5 October 1901) was an Irish officer in the British Army who became General Officer Commanding the Southern District. Early life and education Davis was the son of John Davis, of the Park, Rathfarnham, County Dublin, and his wife, Martha. He was baptised at St Andrew's Catholic Church. He was educated at Cheltenham College. Military career Davis was commissioned as an ensign in the 35th (Royal Sussex) Regiment of Foot in 1852 and saw action during the Indian Rebellion in 1857. Admiral Ernest Neville Rolfe, CB (11 August 1847 – 11 May 1909) was a Royal Navy officer who saw extensive service in Africa. Rolfe entered HMS ''Britannia'' as a cadet in June 1861 and saw active service during the Third Anglo-Ashanti War, during operations on the Congo and Niger rivers from 1874 to 1876, and during the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882. Henry Acland
Sir Henry Wentworth Dyke Acland, 1st Baronet, (23 August 181516 October 1900) was an English physician and educator. Life Henry Acland was born in Killerton, Exeter, the fourth son of Sir Thomas Acland and Lydia Elizabeth Hoare, and educated at Harrow and Christ Church, Oxford. He was elected Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford in 1840, and then studied medicine in London and Edinburgh. Returning to Oxford, he was appointed Lee's reader in anatomy at Christ Church in 1845, was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1847, and in 1851 was appointed Radcliffe librarian and physician to the Radcliffe Infirmary.
