1883–84 British Home Championship
The 1883–84 British Home Championship was the inaugural international football tournament, played between the Home Nations of the British Isles which at the time made up the constituent nations of the United Kingdom; England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. International football matches had begun with annual games played between England and Scotland in 1872 and they had been joined by Wales in 1876 and Ireland in 1882. The tournament was played in an unusual layout, with Ireland playing all three of their games first, and losing heavily in each one. Henry Cursham
Henry Alfred Cursham (27 November 1859 – 6 August 1941) was an English footballer and cricketer. He played football mostly for Notts County, with spells at Corinthian, Grantham Town and Thursday Wanderers. In cricket, he played two first class games for Nottinghamshire. Cursham holds the individual goalscoring record for the FA Cup, with 49 goals in 44 games. He also played eight games for the England national football team, scoring five goals. Football career Cursham was born in 1859 in Wilford, Nottinghamshire. He attended Repton School until age 18 and signed for Notts County in 1877. Cursham made his first team debut on 16 November 1878 in a 3–1 defeat by local rivals Nottingham Forest. John Smith (footballer, Born 1855)
John Smith (12 August 1855 – 16 November 1934) was a Scottish footballer of the 1870s and 1880s. He is also notable for playing rugby union and was a member of the first British Lions team that toured Australia and New Zealand in 1888. Football career Club career Smith began playing football at Mauchline F.C. before transferring to Edinburgh University while he studied. After completing his studies in the early 1880s he joined Queen's Park, where he won the Scottish Cup in 1881, 1882 and 1884. He became the first player to score a hat-trick in a Scottish Cup final when he scored all three of Queen's Park's goals in the 1881 final replay against Dumbarton. He was not selected to play in the 1882 final and no match took place in 1884 – Queen's Park were awarded the trophy after Vale of Leven failed to appear. Arthur Leopold Bambridge (16 June 1861 – 27 November 1923) was an English footballer who made three appearances either as a full back or as a right winger for England between 1881 and 1884. He was one of three brothers who played for England. Career Arthur Bambridge was born in Windsor, Berkshire, the sixth child of Sophia (née Thorington) and William Samuel Bambridge, who had been a missionary in Waimate, New Zealand, and was then the photographer to Queen Victoria. He was educated at St Mark's School in Windsor. His football career was spent with Windsor, Upton Park, Swifts, Clapham Rovers and Corinthian and he gained representative honours for Berkshire. Edward Charles Bambridge (30 July 1858 – 8 November 1935) was an English footballer who made eighteen appearances as a left winger for England between 1879 and 1887, being appointed captain twice. Edward Johnson (footballer Born 1860)
Edward Johnson (March 1860 – 30 June 1901) was an English footballer who played for Stoke and the England national team. He scored Stoke's first goal in the FA Cup and is also the club's first player to be capped. Club career Johnson was born in Stoke-upon-Trent and by the 1870s he was attending the Saltley College in Birmingham where he played a number of sports including association football. He returned to his home town and started playing for Stoke where he played and scored in the club's first competitive match in the FA Cup which was against Manchester in a 2–1 defeat. The Racecourse Ground ( cy, Y Cae Ras) is a football stadium in Wrexham, Wales. It is the home of Wrexham A.F.C.
