1880 Bulgarian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Bulgaria in January and February 1880."Bulgaria", ''The Times'', 31 January 1880"News in Brief", ''The Times'', 3 February 1880 Low voter turnout in some constituencies led to the results being invalidated and the elections re-run. Unlike in former elections, the government did not attempt to influence the result, resulting in the opposition Liberal Party retaining their majority in the National Assembly."Bulgaria", ''The Times'', 6 April 1880 Of the 162 seats, the Liberal Party won 103 and the Conservative Party won 50. When the newly elected Assembly convened, Liberal Party member Petko Karavelov was elected Chairperson. Following the election the government resigned, but incumbent Prime Minister Kliment Turnovski was asked to form another government. Ultimately Dragan Tsankov formed a government and became Prime Minister on 8 April.

The National Assembly was established in 1879 with the Tarnovo Constitution. Dragan Tsankov
Dragan Kiriakov Tsankov ( bg, Драган Киряков Цанков) (9 November 1828 – 24 March 1911) was a Bulgarian politician and the first Liberal Party Prime Minister of the country. He was born in Svishtov. Tsankov was initially a civil servant in the administration of the Ottoman Empire, who in the 1850s gained a reputation as a supporter of the Bulgarian Greek Catholic Church. His paper ''Bũlgaria'' appeared in Constantinople in 1859 and espoused his religious positions. Funded by France, the paper argued that a Uniat with Rome was the only solution to Bulgaria. Indeed, Tsankov, who was educated by the Jesuits, helped to form the Bulgarian Greek Catholic Church in 1861. Later he became closely associated with opposition to the Ottomans and the independence movement. Kliment of Tarnovo (born Vasil Nikolov Drumev, bg, Васил Николов Друмев; c. 1841 – 10 July 1901, known by his title as Metropolitan Kliment of Turnovo), was a leading Bulgarian clergyman and politician. He was also a writer and one of the founders of the Bulgarian Literature Society (BLS; now known as the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences) in 1869. Education He was born in Shumen, where a village now bears his given name in a craftsman family. Originally, he was taught in his native town by Sava Dobroplodni and Sava Filaretov, but afterwards attended the Odessa Seminary. He was influenced by the revolutionary Georgi Sava Rakovski and joined Rakovski's First Bulgarian Legion in Belgrade in 1861, where he distinguished himself in the fight against the Turkish garrison. Conservative Party (Bulgaria)
The Conservative Party ( bg, Консервативна партия) was a Bulgarian party which existed between 1879 and 1884. It was linked with the newspapers Vitosha, Balgarski Glas and Otechestvo. The Conservative party formed the first two governments of Liberated Bulgaria, but it didn't receive a majority in the parliamentary elections held in 1879, triggering a motion of no confidence and snap elections in 1880, which they also lost. It supported the 1881 coup and the Proxy Regime of Alexander I Battenberg which suspended the Tarnovo Constitution after which it was fully discredited and fell apart. As early as 1882 the group of Marko Balabanov joined the moderate wing of the Liberal Party led by Dragan Tsankov which later formed the Progressive Liberal Party.
