1878–79 Home Nations Rugby Union Matches
The 1878–79 Home Nations rugby union matches are a series of international friendlies held between the England, Ireland and Scotland national rugby union teams. The only recognised competition held between the countries was the inaugural Calcutta Cup match, contested between England and Scotland. It was the first challenge for the Cup, and ended in an unspectacular draw. Results Scoring system The matches for this season were decided on goals scored. A goal was awarded for a successful conversion after a try, for a dropped goal or for a goal from mark. If a game was drawn, any unconverted tries were tallied to give a winner. If there was still no clear winner, the match was declared a draw. England National Rugby Union Team
The England national rugby union team represents England in men's international rugby union. They compete in the annual Six Nations Championship with France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. England have won the championship on 29 occasions (as well as sharing 10 victories) – winning the Grand Slam 13 times and the Triple Crown 26 times – making them the most successful outright winners in the tournament's history. They are currently the only team from the Northern Hemisphere to win the Rugby World Cup, having won the tournament in 2003, and have been runners-up on three other occasions. The history of the team extends back to 1871 when the English rugby team played their first official test match, losing 1–0 to Scotland. Henry Taylor was a rugby union international who represented England from 1879 to 1882. Early life Henry Taylor was born on 21 September 1858 in Greenwich. He attended Merchant Taylors' School. Of the 5 matches he played for his national side he was on the winning side on 3 occasions. He was to have played in a sixth match but lost the night mail train to Scotland. Huddersfield Giants are an English professional rugby league club from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, the birthplace of rugby league, who play in the Super League competition. Captain William Penny (1809–1892) was a Scottish shipmaster, whaler and Arctic explorer. He undertook the first maritime search for the ships of Sir John Franklin. In 1840, Penny established the first whaling station in the Cumberland Sound area on Kekerten Island. Biography He was born on 12 July 1809 in Peterhead. John Alexander Neilson
John Neilson (14 June 1858 – 16 July 1915) was a Scottish international rugby union player. He played as a forward. He played for West of Scotland before moving on to Glasgow Academicals. He was called up for the Glasgow District side for the 1874 provincial match against Edinburgh District on 5 December 1874 while still with West of Scotland. Dr. Lennard Stokes was a rugby union international who represented England from 1875 to 1881. He also captained his country on five occasions, notably in the first ever match against Wales.
