The 1876 New York state election was held on November 7, 1876, to elect the Governor of New York, governor, the Lieutenant Governor of New York, lieutenant governor, a judge of the New York Court of Appeals, a Erie Canal Commission, Canal Commissioner and an New York State Prison Inspector, Inspector of State Prisons, as well as all members of the New York State Assembly and two members of the New York State Senate. Besides, two constitutional amendments were proposed - to abolish the elected Erie Canal Commission, Canal Commissioners and appoint a New York State Department of Public Works, Superintendent of Public Works instead; and to abolish the elected New York State Prison Inspectors and appoint a Superintendent of State Prisons instead - and both were accepted by the electorate. Lucius Robinson
Lucius Robinson (November 4, 1810March 23, 1891) was an American lawyer and politician. He was the List of Governors of New York, 26th Governor of New York from 1877 to 1879. Life He graduated from Delaware Academy in Delhi (village), New York, Delhi, New York. Afterwards he studied law in the offices of Erastus Root and Amasa J. Daniel Magone
Daniel Magone (January 12, 1827 – September 4, 1904) was an American lawyer who was Collector of the Port of New York during the first administration of United States President Grover Cleveland. Early life Magone was born in Oswegatchie, New York into an Irish Catholic family. Career Magone became a member of the New York Canal Commission during the governorship of Samuel Tilden, in 1875. The next year he served as chairman of the Democratic Party (United States) state committee. During Tilden's unsuccessful run for the presidency versus Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876, he was a delegate at the Democratic National Convention. In January 1878, he was nominated by Governor Lucius Robinson to be Superintendent of Public Works but was rejected by the New York State Senate. Horatio Seymour (May 31, 1810February 12, 1886) was an American politician. He served as Governor of New York from 1853 to 1854 and from 1863 to 1864. He was the Democratic Party nominee for president in the 1868 United States presidential election, losing to Republican Ulysses S. Grant. Born in Pompey, New York, Seymour was admitted to the New York bar in 1832. He primarily focused on managing his family's business interests.
