1875 Iowa Senate Election
In the 1875 Iowa State Senate elections, Iowa voters elected state senators to serve in the sixteenth Iowa General Assembly. Elections were held in 30 of the state senate's 50 districts. State senators serve four-year terms in the Iowa State Senate. The general election took place on October 12, 1875. Following the previous election, Iowa Republican Party, Republicans had control of the Iowa Senate with 36 seats to Democratic Party of Iowa, Democrats' 10 seats and four members of the Anti-Monopoly Party (US), Anti-Monopoly Party. To claim control of the chamber from Iowa Republican Party, Republicans, the Democratic Party of Iowa, Democrats needed to net 16 Senate seats. Iowa Republican Party, Republicans maintained control of the Iowa State Senate following the 1875 general election with the balance of power shifting to Republican Party of Iowa, Republicans holding 40 seats and Democratic Party of Iowa, Democrats having 10 seats (a net gain of 4 seats for Republicans). Iowa State Senate
The Iowa Senate is the upper house of the Iowa General Assembly, United States. There are 50 seats in the Iowa Senate, representing 50 single-member districts across the state of Iowa with populations of approximately 60,927 per constituency, . Each Senate district is composed of two House districts. The Senate meets at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines. Unlike the lower house, the Iowa House of Representatives, Senators serve four-year terms, with no term limits. Terms are staggered so that half the Senate is up for reelection every two years. Leadership The President of the Senate presides over the body, whose powers include referring bills to committee, recognizing members during debate, and making procedural rulings. Unlike the more powerful Speaker of the Iowa House of Representatives, the Senate President cannot appoint committee chairmanships or shuffle committee memberships.
