11th General Assembly Of Newfoundland
The members of the 11th General Assembly of Newfoundland were elected in the 1873 Newfoundland general election, Newfoundland general election held in November 1873. The general assembly sat from February 1874 to Fall 1874. The Anti-Confederation Party led by Charles Fox Bennett won the election. However, defections and resignations before the assembly's opening reduced his party to a minority and Frederick Carter formed the government in 1874. Prescott Emerson was chosen as speaker. Alexander James Whiteford McNeily
Alexander James Whiteford McNeilly (August 7, 1845 – October 9, 1911) was an Irish-born lawyer and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Bonavista from 1873 to 1878, Twillingate and Fogo from 1878 to 1882 and Bay de Verde from 1885 to 1889 in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. He was born in Armagh, the son of Isaac McNeily and Olivia Whiteford, and came to Newfoundland with his brother and widowed mother in 1849. McNeilly studied at Queen's University in Ireland, articled in law with Hugh William Hoyles and was called to the bar in 1870. In 1878, he married Jessie Emma Sutcliff, the daughter of James Johnstone Rogerson. McNeilly was named Queen's Counsel in 1880. He was speaker for the Newfoundland assembly from 1879 to 1882 and from 1886 to 1889. Ambrose Shea
Sir Ambrose Shea (17 September 1815 – 30 July 1905) was a political and business figure in colonial Newfoundland who later served as Governor of the Bahamas. He was one of two Newfoundland delegates to the Quebec Conference that led to Canadian confederation. Life Shea was born in St. John's, Newfoundland Colony, the fifth son of Henry Shea and Eleanor Ryan. His father had emigrated from County Tipperary, Ireland. Ambrose Shea worked for a time on ''The Newfoundlander'', a family-owned newspaper, before going into business for himself. By the 1850s, he was a successful merchant who also dealt in insurance, and acted as the agent for the transatlantic steamer trade. He continued to operate the business during most of his political career. In addition, he helped found the Newfoundland Natives Society in 1840, serving on the management committee in 1842, and as president in 1846. Harbour Grace
Harbour Grace is a town in Conception Bay on the Avalon Peninsula in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. With roots dating back to the 16th century, it is one of the oldest towns in North America. It is located about northwest of the provincial capital, St. John's. John Rorke
John Rorke (9 June 1807 – 13 August 1896) was an Irish-born merchant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Carbonear in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1863 to 1882 as a Conservative and Confederate. He was born in Athlone and came to Newfoundland in 1824, working as a clerk for Bennett and Ridley, a fishery supply firm. Carbonear is a town on the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It overlooks the west side of Conception Bay and had a history long tied to fishing and shipbuilding. Bay de Verde ( 2016 population: 392) is an incorporated town in Conception Bay on the northern tip of the Bay de Verde Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
