1872–73 Scottish Districts Season
The 1872-73 Scottish Districts season is a record of all the rugby union matches for Scotland's district teams. It includes the Inter-City fixtures between Glasgow District and Edinburgh District. History The Glasgow District v Edinburgh District match is the first representative district match in the world. Originally this was a twice a season fixture; and it was in this 1872-73 season. The matches in this season were 20 - a - side. The district matches between Glasgow and Edinburgh, as Scotland's two largest cities, were known as the Inter-City rivalry. 1873–74 Scottish Districts Season
The 1873–74 Scottish Districts season is a record of all the rugby union matches for Scotland's district teams. It includes the Inter-City fixtures between Glasgow District and Edinburgh District. History The matches here remain 20 - a - side. These matches, with more players on the park, made it harder to score. In addition, scoring a try did not count for points. The try gave you an attempt to get a score by means of the conversion; if the conversion was missed then it did not benefit the try scoring team. It was only goals that mattered. The second inter-city match here is a case in point. Edinburgh scored a try but missed the conversion. Hence the match ended in a draw. Results Inter-City Edinburgh District: J. L. George Raphael Fleming
George Raphael Fleming (5 August 1850 – 13 December 1909) was a Scottish rugby union international player. He was born in Cathcart, Renfrewshire (now a suburb of Glasgow). Rugby Union career Amateur career Fleming played as a forward for Glasgow Academicals. Provincial career He represented Glasgow District against Edinburgh District in the world's first provincial match, the 'inter-city', on 23 November 1872, and also played in the 5 December 1874 match. John Lisle Hall McFarlane
Dr John Lisle Hall McFarlane MB ChB (19 June 1851 – 17 March 1874) was a Scottish physician and international rugby union player and sportsman. Personal history McFarlane was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica in 1851 to John MacFarlane, and Edinburgh-educated surgeon, who had married Anna Smith, the daughter of a Jamaican estate owner. McFarlane's middle name of Lisle was taken from his mother's forbearers who held connections to the Barons Lisle. McFarlane grew up in Scotland and was educated at several of the country's finest schools. He attended the Edinburgh Institute of Maths before switching as a boarder at the private Abbey Park School in St Andrews. It was at the establishments that he developed his enjoyment of sport and where he began to play rugby. In 1869 he left Abbey Park to enrol at Craigmount School, supposedly just to get into the cricket team. McFarlane matriculated to Edinburgh University where he studied medicine. Benjamin Blyth II
Benjamin Hall Blyth FRSE (25 May 1849 – 13 May 1917), often called Benjamin Blyth II, was a Scottish civil engineer. Family Blyth, who was born at 36 Minto Street, Edinburgh, was the eldest of the nine children of Mary Dudgeon Wright and the railway engineer Benjamin Blyth. He was educated at Merchiston Castle School between 1860 and 1864 before studying for a Master of Arts degree from the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1867. After the death of both parents – Benjamin Blyth in 1866 and Mary Dudgeon Wright in 1868 – Blyth and his siblings were brought up by their mother's sister, Elizabeth Scotland Wright. Tom Whittington (19 August 1848 – 7 October 1919) was a Scotland international rugby union player who represented Scotland in 1873. Although from Wales, Whittington was schooled in Edinburgh. Charles Walker Cathcart
Charles Walker Cathcart, CBE, MB CM, FRCSEd, FRCSE (16 March 1853 – 22 February 1932) was a Scottish surgeon who worked for most of his career at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE). As a young man he had represented Scotland at rugby on three occasions. During the First World War he jointly published an account of the value of sphagnum moss as a wound dressing which led to its widespread use by the British Army for that purpose. As conservator of the museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) he enlarged the museum accommodation, expanded the museum collection with the addition of over 1,300 new specimens and a large collection of histological slides. His creation of the first comprehensive catalogue of the museum collection greatly enhanced its value as a teaching and research resource. His textbook ''A Surgical Handbook,'' written jointly with Francis Caird and first published in 1889, became a best seller running to 19 editions by 1921. Early life ... Alexander Petrie (14 February 1853 – 4 February 1909) was a Scotland international rugby union player who represented Scotland from 1873 to 1880. Rugby Union career Amateur career Petrie played as a forward for Royal HSFP. Provincial career Petrie represented Edinburgh District against Glasgow District in the world's first provincial match, the 'inter-city', on 23 November 1872. Angus Buchanan (15 January 1847 – 21 February 1927) was a Scottish international rugby and cricket player. One of the earliest Scottish players, he was capped for in 1871.
