1871 Massachusetts Legislature
The 92nd Massachusetts General Court, consisting of the Massachusetts Senate and the Massachusetts House of Representatives, met in 1871 during the governorship of Republican William Claflin. Horace H. Coolidge served as president of the Senate and Harvey Jewell served as speaker of the House. Massachusetts General Court
The Massachusetts General Court (formally styled the General Court of Massachusetts) is the state legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The name "General Court" is a hold-over from the earliest days of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, when the colonial assembly, in addition to making laws, sat as a judicial court of appeals. Before the adoption of the state constitution in 1780, it was called the ''Great and General Court'', but the official title was shortened by John Adams, author of the state constitution. It is a bicameral body. The upper house is the Massachusetts Senate which is composed of 40 members. The lower body, the Massachusetts House of Representatives, has 160 members. (Until 1978, it had 240 members.) It meets in the Massachusetts State House on Beacon Hill in Boston. James Augustus Fox
James Augustus Fox (August 11, 1827September 1901) was an American lawyer, soldier, and statesman. Personal life Born in the Massachusetts capital city Boston on August 11, 1827, James Augustus Fox was descended from English and Scottish people. His father—George Howe Fox—came from the line of the author John Foxe, while his mother—Emily Fox ()—was related to the statesman John Murray Forbes. Fox attended Boston Public Schools and Harvard Law School before clerking for John C. Park. Fox and Julia Elizabeth (of Providence, Rhode Island) were married in 1848. The couple had three daughters—Henrietta, Julia, and Lillian—before Julia Elizabeth died in 1872. That same year, Fox moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Horace Hopkins Coolidge
Quintus Horatius Flaccus (; 8 December 65 – 27 November 8 BC), known in the English-speaking world as Horace (), was the leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus (also known as Octavian). The rhetorician Quintilian regarded his '' Odes'' as just about the only Latin lyrics worth reading: "He can be lofty sometimes, yet he is also full of charm and grace, versatile in his figures, and felicitously daring in his choice of words."Quintilian 10.1.96. The only other lyrical poet Quintilian thought comparable with Horace was the now obscure poet/metrical theorist, Caesius Bassus (R. Patrick Collins (mayor)
Patrick Andrew Collins (March 12, 1844 – September 13, 1905) was a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts and Mayor of Boston from 1902 until his death. Biography Early life Collins was born March 12, 1844, near Fermoy, County Cork, Ireland. His family emigrated to the United States and settled in Chelsea, Massachusetts, in 1848 after the death of his father. Collins attended public schools until the age of 12. He then worked at various trades in Massachusetts and Ohio. At age 15, he returned to Boston and learned the upholstery trade. Working in an upholstery shop, he rose to position of foreman and became active in the trade union movement. He became a secretary of his union and a delegate to the Trades Assembly. Interested in a career in law, Collins saved his money and became active in politics. Public service In 1867, Collins was nominated for a seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
