10th General Assembly Of Newfoundland
The members of the 10th General Assembly of Newfoundland were elected in the Newfoundland general election held in November 1869. The general assembly sat from 1870 to 1873. The Anti-Confederation Party led by Charles Fox Bennett won the election and Bennett served as Newfoundland's premier. Alexander Graham (April 6, 1816 – May 1, 1895) was an American politician and businessman. Born in Utica, New York, Graham was educated in Homer, New York. Graham was in the banking and real estate business. He served as superintendent of schools in Chemung County, New York and then in Tompkins County, New York. In 1851, he served in the New York State Assembly, as a Whig, from Tompkins County, New York. In 1858, he settled in Janesville, Wisconsin. He served as school commissioner in Janesville and served on the Janesville Common Council in 1864. John Munn (Newfoundland Politician)
John Munn (1807 – September 29, 1879) was a Scottish-born merchant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Conception Bay from 1842 to 1848 and Harbour Grace from 1869 to 1873 in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly as a Conservative. Mann was born at Port Bannatyne near Rothesay in Scotland, the son of Stewart Munn and Isabella Fisher, and came to St. John's in 1825. He worked there as a bookkeeper until 1833, when he moved to Harbour Grace and opened a business with Captain William Punton. The company became involved in the seal trade and shipbuilding. Munn married Naomi Munden in 1838. In the 1870s, Munn's company purchased Thomas Ridley's assets. He helped found the Union Bank and served as a director. He also owned the ''Harbour Grace Standard'' newspaper. Munn was named to the Legislative Council in 1855; he served until 1869. Munn died in England in 1879, in Southport, Lancashire. Harbour Grace is a town in Conception Bay on the Avalon Peninsula in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. John Rorke
John Rorke (9 June 1807 – 13 August 1896) was an Irish-born merchant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Carbonear in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1863 to 1882 as a Conservative and Confederate. He was born in Athlone and came to Newfoundland in 1824, working as a clerk for Bennett and Ridley, a fishery supply firm. Carbonear is a town on the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It overlooks the west side of Conception Bay and had a history long tied to fishing and shipbuilding. John Bemister
John Bemister (1815 – December 19, 1892) was a merchant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Conception Bay from 1852 to 1855 and Bay de Verde from 1855 to 1869 in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. He was born in Carbonear, the son of William Willis Bemister and Ann Howell. He was first employed as clerk and bookkeeper in his father's firm and then operated branches in New Perlican on Trinity Bay and in Carbonear. In 1839, he married Jane Taylor. He was named to the Executive Council in 1861 and became receiver general in 1862. After he was reelected in 1869, he resigned his seat to become sheriff for the Northern District, retiring in 1891. Bay De Verde, Newfoundland And Labrador
Bay de Verde ( 2016 population: 392) is an incorporated town in Conception Bay on the northern tip of the Bay de Verde Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
