1866 West Sydney Colonial By-election
A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of West Sydney on 17 January 1866 because John Robertson had been re-appointed Secretary for Lands in the fourth Cowper ministry. Such ministerial by-elections were usually uncontested however on this occasion a poll was required at both West Sydney and The Williams ( Marshall Burdekin). Both Robertson and Burdekin were defeated, with the Cowper government falling, replaced by the second Martin ministry. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. William Charles Windeyer
Sir William Charles Windeyer (29 September 1834 – 11 September 1897) was an Australian politician and judge. As a New South Wales politician he was responsible for the creation of Belmore Park (north of the new Central railway constructed in 1874 in Haymarket), Lang Park (in Church Hill, between York, Lang and Grosvenor Streets in the city), Observatory Park (on Flagstaff Hill in the west Rocks) and Cromwell Park at the head of Long Bay, Malabar and parks on Clark, Rodd, and Snapper Islands. He was also the author of the New South Wales Patents Act and the Married Women's Property Act of 1879. As a judge he was able, conscientious and hard-working, and had much knowledge of law. He had the misfortune to preside over two notorious cases, the Mount Rennie rape case and the Dean trials, which caused much popular feeling, and gave him the reputation in some quarters of being a "hanging" judge. Speaker Of The New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly, New South Wales's lower chamber of Parliament. The current Speaker is Jonathan O'Dea, who was elected on 7 May 2019. Traditionally a partisan office, filled by the governing party of the time, O'Dea replaced the previous Liberal Speaker Shelley Hancock, following the 2019 state election. Role The Speaker presides over the House's debates, determining which members may speak. The Speaker is also responsible for maintaining order during debate, and may punish members who break the rules of the House. Conventionally, the Speaker remains non-partisan, and renounces all affiliation with his former political party when taking office. Martin Ministry (1866–68)
The Martin Ministry was the ministry of the seventh Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Clare Martin. It was sworn in on 27 August 2001 after Martin's victory 2001 election. In addition to Martin as the first ever female Chief Minister, it also included the first ever indigenous minister in Jack Ah Kit. Martin served until November 2007, when she was succeeded by her deputy, Paul Henderson. First ministry (27 August 2001 – 12 November 2001) The first ministry lasted until 12 November 2001, when Martin made some portfolio changes and installed a more permanent ministry. Marshall Burdekin
Marshall Burdekin (11 April 1837 – 10 November 1886) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sydney to merchant Thomas Burdekin and Mary Ann Bossley. Educated at Darlinghurst, he received a Master of Arts from the University of Sydney in 1859 and was called to the bar later that year. He had inherited a large fortune from his father in 1844. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Liverpool Plains at the 1863 by-election, transferring to The Williams at the 1864–65 election. In 1866 he was appointed Colonial Treasurer, but he was defeated at the ministerial by-election, and thus held office for less than a month. He returned to the Assembly at the 1867 by-election for East Sydney, but he did not re-contest in 1869. Subsequently he lived mainly overseas, falling seriously ill in America in 1877 and suffering from ill health continuously until his death in England in 1886.
