1864 Maryland Gubernatorial Election
The 1864 Maryland gubernatorial election took place on November 8, 1864. Incumbent Union Party Governor of Maryland, Governor Augustus Bradford did not run for re-election. Union Party candidate Thomas Swann defeated Democratic Party (United States), Democratic candidate Ezekiel F. Chambers. The Union Party was a faction of the Maryland Democratic Party which supported the Presidency of Abraham Lincoln, Lincoln administration. The party supported the re-election of Abraham Lincoln under the banner of the National Union Party (United States), National Union Party. Swann took his oath of office on January 11, 1865, but by a provision of the Maryland Constitution of 1864, 1864 State Constitution, he did not actually become Governor until January 10, 1866. Thomas Swann (February 3, 1809 – July 24, 1883) was an American lawyer and Politics of the United States, politician who also was President of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad as it completed track to Wheeling, West Virginia, Wheeling and gained access to the Ohio River Valley. Ezekiel Forman Chambers (1788–1867)
Ezekiel Forman Chambers (February 28, 1788January 30, 1867) was an American politician. Born in Chestertown, Maryland, Chambers was graduated from Washington College at Chestertown in 1805. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1808, and commenced practice in Chestertown. Chambers served during the War of 1812 as a captain of militia, commanding a company at the Battle of Caulk's Field in 1814. He attained the rank of brigadier general of militia after the war. In 1822, Chambers served in the Maryland State Senate. Chambers was elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Edward Lloyd. He was reelected in 1831 and served from January 24, 1826, until his own resignation on December 20, 1834. Augustus Williamson Bradford (January 9, 1806 – March 1, 1881), a Democratic Party (United States), Democrat, was the List of Governors of Maryland, 32nd Governor of Maryland in the United States from 1862 to 1866. He served as governor during the American Civil War, Civil War and paid a heavy price for his devotion to the Union. National Union Party (United States)
The National Union Party was the temporary name used by the Republican Party and elements of other parties for the national ticket in the 1864 presidential election that was held during the Civil War. For the most part, state Republican parties did not change their name. The temporary name was used to attract War Democrats, border state voters, Unconditional Unionist, and Unionist Party members who might otherwise have not voted for the Republican Party. Maryland Constitution Of 1864
The Maryland Constitution of 1864 was the third of the four constitutions which have governed the U.S. state of Maryland. A controversial product of the Civil War and in effect only until 1867, when the state's present constitution was adopted, the 1864 document was short-lived. Drafting The 1864 constitution was largely the product of strong Unionists, who had control of the state at the time. The document outlawed slavery, disenfranchised Southern sympathizers, and reapportioned the General Assembly based upon the number of white inhabitants. This provision further diminished the power of the small counties where the majority of the state's large former slave population lived.
