1861 Parramatta Colonial By-election
A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Parramatta on 10 April 1861 caused by the resignation of sitting member James Byrnes. At the election in December 1860 he gained second place behind a newcomer John Lackey. While still successful, Byrnes took offence at being placed second, stating that the majority of voters had decided that he was not fit to serve them and resigned in March 1861 without taking his seat. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. Electoral District Of Liverpool Plains
Liverpool Plains was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, created in 1859 and including the Liverpool Plains (which includes Quirindi and Gunnedah) and the extensive pastoral district around the Gwydir River in the northwest of the state. It was created when the seat of Liverpool Plains and Gwydir was divided into two. It was abolished in 1880, and partly replaced by Gunnedah. It was re-created in the 1904 re-distribution of electorates following the 1903 New South Wales referendum, which required the number of members of the Legislative Assembly to be reduced from 125 to 90. It consisted of parts of the abolished seats of Gunnedah, Quirindi, and Wellington. In 1920, with the introduction of proportional representation it was absorbed into Wammerawa, along with Castlereagh and Mudgee. The ''Empire'' was a newspaper published in Sydney, Australia. It was published from 28 December 1850 to 14 February 1875, except for the period from 28 August 1858 to 23 May 1859, when publication was suspended. It was later absorbed by '' The Evening News''. History Henry Parkes founded the ''Empire'' and was its editor/proprietor until the business failed in August 1858. He made it "a newspaper destined to be the chief organ of mid-century liberalism and to serve as the rallying and reconciliation point for the sharpest radical and liberal minds of the day". Arthur Holroyd
Arthur Todd Holroyd (1 December 1806 – 15 June 1887) was an Australian lawyer and politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council between 1851 and 1856. He was also a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for two periods between 1856 and 1857 and again between 1861 and 1864. Biography Early life Arthur Todd Holroyd was born in London on 1 December 1806, the youngest child of the merchant Stephen Holroyd and Elizabeth (''née'' Lofthouse). His father died in January 1810 when Arthur was aged three years. After a preliminary education in private schools, Arthur Holroyd was sent to Ripon Grammar School, North Yorkshire, "for a couple of years". In 1824 he began to study medicine in Winchester. The 1860 New South Wales colonial election was for 72 members representing 60 electoral districts. The election was conducted on the basis of a simple majority or first-past-the-post voting system. In this election there were 8 multi-member districts returning 20 members and 52 single member districts. In the multi-member districts each elector could vote for as many candidates as there were vacancies. 15 districts were uncontested. There were three districts that did not have a residential or property qualification, Goldfields North (650), Goldfields South (3,720) and Goldfields West (8,400). The average number of enrolled voters per seat in the other districts was 1,394 ranging from The Paterson (536) to The Lachlan (3,592). Charles Kemp (politician)
Charles Kemp (2 June 1813 – 25 August 1864) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in London to carpenter Simon Kemp and Mary Ann Cox. He and his family migrated to Port Stephens; he moved to Sydney in 1831 and, after a period in a carpenters' shop, was the colony's first parliamentary reporter. In 1838, he married Stella Christie; they adopted one daughter. Kemp was the proprietor of The Sydney Morning Herald from 1841 until 1853. Kemp also worked as an underwriter and also went into real estate and the stock market. From 1855 to 1856, he was an inaugural railway commissioner, the government having assumed control of the Sydney and Hunter River Railway Companies, which he had founded.
