1856 Tasmanian Colonial Election
The 1856 Tasmanian colonial elections took place from 8 to 22 September 1856 (for the House of Assembly) and 6 to 17 October 1856 (for the Legislative Council). The elections were the first to be held under the ''Electoral Act 1856'', which established responsible government in Tasmania (until 1 January 1856 called Van Diemen's Land) and created a bicameral parliament consisting of the 30-member Tasmanian House of Assembly and the 15-member Tasmanian Legislative Council. Members were elected using first-past-the-post voting. Following the election, William Champ became the first Premier of Tasmania on 1 November 1856, but his government lasted only 117 days. William Champ
William Thomas Napier Champ (15 April 1808 – 25 August 1892) was a soldier and politician who served as the first Premier of Tasmania from 1856 to 1857. He was born in the United Kingdom. Early life Champ was born in Maldon, Essex, England the son of Captain Thomas Champ and his wife Mary Anne ''née'' Blackaller. Champ was educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He joined the army as an ensign when 18 years old and later became an adjutant. Army and police career Champ was serving with the 63rd Regiment of Foot as an ensign by 1826 and was posted with them to Sydney, New South Wales in October 1828. Some of the regiment was detached as a garrison force for the Macquarie Harbour Penal Station, Van Diemens Land (now Tasmania) in 1829, and Champ was amongst them. As a lieutenant with the 63rd, he took part in the Black War campaign which was an attempt to segregate Tasmanian Aborigines near the end of 1830. John Gregson (politician)
John Compton Gregson (c. March 1821 – 16 December 1867) was a politician, member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly 1856 to 1859 and the Tasmanian Legislative Council 1859 to 1864. Gregson was the eldest son of Thomas George Gregson Premier of Tasmania in 1857. Gregson was Chairman of Quarter Sessions at Launceston until being elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly for Norfolk Plains on 13 September 1856, a position he held until 11 May 1859. Gregson was Attorney-General in his father's Administration, which only lasted from February to April 1857. Robert Officer
Sir Robert Officer M.A., (3 October 1800 – 8 July 1879) was an Australian politician and medical officer. Early life Officer was the son of Robert Officer, and was born in Dundee, Forfarshire, Scotland, and graduated B.A., and subsequently M.A., at St. Andrews University. Having obtained his diploma as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, England, he emigrated to Tasmania, where he married Scotland-born Jemima Patterson in 1823 and was appointed Government medical officer for New Norfolk in 1824. He moved to nearby Bothwell with his family, after receiving a land grant on the Clyde River in 1826. In 1835, the family moved to Hobart. He also acquired considerable private practice in partnership with Dr. James Agnew, who was later Premier of the colony.
