1850 Chicago Mayoral Election
the Chicago mayoral election of 1850, Democrat James Curtiss defeated Levi Boone and Lewis C. Kerchival by a double-digit margin. The incumbent mayor James H. Woodworth did not run for a third term. Curtiss had previously served one term as mayor, having previously been elected in 1847. This was Curtiss' fourth mayoral campaign, as he also ran unsuccessful campaigns in 1839 and 1848. Kerchival had also been an unsuccessful candidate in the previous election. 1849 Chicago Mayoral Election
In the Chicago mayoral election of 1849, incumbent James H. Woodworth was reelected in a landslide. This election made Woodworth the first Chicago mayor to be successfully reelected to a second ''consecutive'' term (an accolade that would have belonged to Augustus Garrett had the results of the March 1844 Chicago mayoral election not been declared null). Woodworth was also only the third mayor to be elected to a second term, after only Benjamin Wright Raymond and Augustus Garrett. Campaign The election is notable for the lack of political party involvement. With the major national political parties disintegrating over the national debate surrounding slavery, the 1849 mayoral campaign lacked party conventions to nominate candidates. Instead, candidates were self-nominated. There was also a lack of party-organized efforts to support any candidate. 1851 Chicago Mayoral Election
In the 1851 Chicago mayoral election, Walter S. Gurnee defeated incumbent mayor James Curtiss as well as Eli B. Williams and Edward K. Rogers by a landslide 36.25% margin. The Whig Party decided against nominating a ticket in the 1851 Chicago municipal elections. Results Gurnee defeated incumbent Democrat James Curtiss as well as Eli B. Williams and Edward K. Rogers. Owing to a large number voters not being in compliance with new election laws, an unprecedented number of voters were refused tickets. Gurnee received a plurality of votes from all major political parties. It is believed that his vote total from Whigs was as great as his vote total from Democrats. Many political analysts treated the election (which unseated incumbent Democrat James Curtiss) as a "Whig Party victory". James Curtiss
James Curtiss (also Curtis; March 29, 1806 – November 2, 1859) was an American politician who twice served as Mayor of Chicago, Illinois (1847–1848 and 1850–1851) for the Democratic Party. Early life Born on April 7, 1806 in Wethersfield, Connecticut, Curtiss became a printer's apprentice at an early age in Philadelphia. He worked for a time at the Portland ''Argus'', then was printer, and eventually editor and publisher of the Eastport ''Northern Light'', a Jackson Democrat newspaper. He married Mary Kimball on May 18, 1830. From 1830 through 1835, he served as a postmaster in Eastport. In 1834, Curtiss was under investigation by the Postmaster General for his management of the office. Political career in Chicago Curtiss arrived in Chicago from Eastport, Maine in 1835 and became editor of the ''Chicago Democrat''. Levi Day Boone (December 6, 1808 – January 24, 1882) served as mayor of Chicago, Illinois (1855–1856) for the American Party (Know-Nothings). Early life Boone was born near Lexington, Kentucky, the seventh son of Squire and Anna Grubbs Boone. Squire Boone, Sr. was Daniel Boone's father and Levi Boone's great-grandfather, making Levi Boone Daniel Boone's great-nephew. Young Levi lost his father at the age of 9 when Squire finally succumbed to wounds which he incurred at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Despite the poverty the family was plunged into by the death of Squire Boone, Levi graduated from the medical school of Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky in 1829 at the age of 21. James Hutchinson Woodworth
James Hutchinson Woodworth (December 4, 1804 – March 26, 1869), was a member of the Illinois State Senate and the Illinois State House of Representatives, served as a Chicago Alderman, was elected to consecutive terms as Mayor of Chicago, Illinois (1848–1850) as an Independent Democrat, and served one term in the US House of Representatives as a member of the Republican Party. Woodworth completed his career in Chicago as one of the city's most noteworthy bankers. He is a member of the Woodworth political family. The 1839 Chicago mayoral election saw Whig nominee Benjamin Wright Raymond defeat Democratic nominee James Curtiss by a landslide 25 point margin. The election was held on March 5. Campaign With the nation enduring a difficult economic recession, many citizens believed that successful merchant Benjamin Raymond would be a wise choice for the city' next mayor. However, Raymond was initially not amenable to the prospect of serving as mayor. When former mayor William B. Ogden attempted to persuade him at his dry goods store to run for mayor, Raymond initially, "leaped over the counter and knocked Mr. Ogden's prostrate with a bolt of factory-cloth."
