1833 United States Senate Special Election In New York
The 1833 United States Senate special election in New York was held on January 4, 1833, by the New York State Legislature to elect a U.S. Senator from New York, U.S. Senator (Class 3) to represent the State of New York (state), New York in the United States Senate. Background William L. Marcy had been elected in 1831 to this seat. In New York gubernatorial election, 1832, November 1832, Marcy was elected Governor, and upon taking office resigned his Senate seat on January 1, 1833. James Kent (July 31, 1763 – December 12, 1847), sometimes called the "American Blackstone", was an American jurist, New York legislator and legal scholar. Jabez Delano Hammond
Jabez Delano Hammond (August 2, 1778 – August 18, 1855) was an American physician, lawyer, author and politician. Life Hammond was born in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He practiced medicine in Reading, Vermont, but afterward studied law and followed that profession at Cherry Valley. He was a Democratic-Republican member of the United States Congress from 1815 to 1817, a member of the New York State Senate from 1817 to 1821, and a member of the Council of Appointment in 1818. In 1825, he was appointed one of the commissioners in the settlement of the claims of New York State against the Federal Government. In April 1825, he was appointed one of three State Road Commissioners, the other two were Nathaniel Pitcher and George Morell. Levi Hubbell
Levi Hubbell (April 15, 1808 – December 8, 1876) was an American lawyer, judge, and politician. He was the first Wisconsin state official to be impeached by the Wisconsin State Assembly in his role as Wisconsin circuit court judge for the 2nd circuit. He was also Chief Justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court prior to the 1852 law which organized a separate Supreme Court, and he later became the first United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. John Adams Dix (July 24, 1798 – April 21, 1879) was an American politician and military officer who was Secretary of the Treasury, Governor of New York and Union major general during the Civil War. Azariah Cutting Flagg (November 28, 1790 – November 24, 1873) was an American newspaper printer and editor, and politician. Early life Azariah Flagg was the second son of Ebenezer Flagg (1756–1828) and Elizabeth Cutting Flagg (d. 1838). At age eleven, he took five-year apprenticeship in 1801–1806 with his uncle, who was a printer in Burlington, Vermont. After learning and starting practicing trade as journeyman printer, he decided to try his fortunes in Plattsburgh, New York, where he arrived in October 1811. He married Phoebe Maria Cole in October 1814; she gave birth to two daughters, Martha Maria, and Elizabeth, and a son, Henry Franklin. Myron Holley
Myron Holley (April 29, 1779 Salisbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut – March 4, 1841 Rochester, Monroe County, New York) was an American politician who had a large part in the construction of the Erie Canal. Life Holley was the son of Luther Holley (1752–1824) and Sarah Dakin Holley (1755–1830). He graduated in 1799 from Williams College. He was a member from Ontario County of the New York State Assembly in 1816 and 1820-21. He worked with DeWitt Clinton to convince the State Legislature to finance the construction of the Erie Canal. He was among the Erie Canal Commissioners appointed in 1816 to supervise the construction and was chosen Treasurer of the Canal Commission.
