1832 Newfoundland General Election
The 1832 Newfoundland general election came after many years of agitation against the British Parliament. Newfoundland was the last British colony in North America to gain representative government. 1st General Assembly Of Newfoundland
The members of the 1st General Assembly of Newfoundland were elected in the Newfoundland general election held in November 1832, the first general election for the colony. The general assembly sat from January 1, 1833 until 1836. John Bingley Garland was chosen as speaker. Thomas Bennett replaced Garland as speaker in 1834. The first session of the general assembly met in a tavern and lodging house in St. John's operated by a Mary Travers; the elected assembly met on the ground floor and the appointed Board of Council met on the upper floor. A different location, the Old Court House, was used for the second and subsequent sessions. In 1833, the assembly passed a Revenue Bill which would provide much-needed funds to support the operation of the colony. The bill was subsequently rejected by the Legislative Council. Fogo, Newfoundland And Labrador
Fogo is an outport community on Fogo Island in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It was previously incorporated as a town prior to becoming part of the Town of Fogo Island through an amalgamation in 2011. Harbour Grace is a town in Conception Bay on the Avalon Peninsula in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. With roots dating back to the 16th century, it is one of the oldest towns in North America. It is located about northwest of the provincial capital, St. John's. Charles Cozens (1784 – August 6, 1863), politician, magistrate, was elected to the House of Assembly representing the district of Conception Bay on the first general election held in Newfoundland in 1832. Cozens was born at Blandford, Dorset England and immigrated to Newfoundland in the early 19th century. He was a cooper by trade and is accredited with establishing the road from Brigus to Makinsons.
