Hutchins Gordon Burton
Hutchins Gordon Burton (1774April 21, 1836) was the 22nd Governor of the U.S. state of North Carolina from 1824 to 1827. Some sources indicate that he was not affiliated with any party at the time, although he was associated, according to other sources, with the Federalist Party and later with the National Republican Party. There is some uncertainty as to the time and place of Burton's birth. Burton appears to have been born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia in 1774. However, some sources also give his birth year as 1782. Burton was sent to Granville County, North Carolina (now Vance County) to live with his uncle, Revolutionary War Colonel and politician Robert Burton, when his father died. Young Burton went on to practice law, serve in the North Carolina General Assembly, and be elected by that body as North Carolina Attorney General. George Outlaw
George Outlaw (October 25, 1771 – August 15, 1825) was a U.S. Congressman from North Carolina in 1825. Outlaw, born near Windsor, North Carolina, in Bertie County, was educated by private teachers and in the common schools. He engaged in agricultural and mercantile pursuits and was elected to the North Carolina House of Commons for a term in 1796 to 1797. He rose to the North Carolina Senate, serving in 1802 from 1806 to 1808 from 1810 to 1814, 1817, 1821, and 1822, where he was that body's speaker in 1812, 1813, and 1814. Following the resignation of Rep. Hutchins Burton, Outlaw was sent to the 18th U.S. Congress in a special election; he served for less than two months in Congress, from January 19, 1825, to March 3, 1825. Willis Alston Jr. (1769April 10, 1837) was a politician and slaveowner from North Carolina. A member of the Democratic-Republican Party and later a Jacksonian, he served as a US Representative in the 6th to the 13th Congresses (1799–1815) and the 19th to the 21st Congresses (1825–1831). He was the nephew of Nathaniel Macon. Early life Willis Alston was born in 1769 near Littleton in the Province of North Carolina. Career Alston engaged in agricultural pursuits at his slave plantation, Butterwood Plantation. He was elected to the North Carolina House of Commons in 1790 and served for two years; in 1794 he was elected to a single term in the North Carolina Senate.
