1813 United States House Of Representatives Elections In New Jersey
New Jersey kept its delegation at six seats but changed from electing its Representatives on a statewide general ticket to using three plural districts of two seats each. These districts were used only for the 1812 election, and the state returned to using a single at-large district United States House of Representatives elections in New Jersey, 1814, in 1814. This was only the second time that New Jersey used districts (the first being United States House of Representatives elections in New Jersey, 1798, in 1798). General Ticket
The general ticket, also known as party block voting (PBV) or ticket voting, is a type of block voting in which voters opt for a party, or a team's set list of candidates, and the highest-polling party/team becomes the winner. Unless specifically altered, this electoral system (''at-large'' voting) results in the victorious political party receiving ''100%'' of the seats. Rarely used today, the general ticket is usually applied in more than one multi-member district, which theoretically allows regionally strong minority parties to win some seats, but the strongest party nationally still typically wins with a landslide. This systems is largely seen as outdated and undemocratic due to its extreme majoritarian results, and has mostly been replaced by party-list proportional (allowing fair representation to all parties) or first-past-the-post voting (allowing voters to vote for individual candidates in single-member districts). Richard Stockton (1764-1828)
Richard Stockton (April 17, 1764March 7, 1828) was a lawyer who represented New Jersey in the United States Senate and later served in the United States House of Representatives. He was the first U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, holding that office from 1789 to 1791, and ran unsuccessfully for vice president in the 1820 election as a member of the Federalist Party, which did not nominate a candidate for president. Life Stockton was born in Princeton, New Jersey, the son of Richard Stockton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was tutored privately, and graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1779. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1784 and commenced practice in Princeton. Jacob Hufty (1750 - May 20, 1814) was a U.S. Representative from New Jersey, serving three terms from 1809 to 1814. Early life and education Born in New Jersey in 1750, Hufty was a blacksmith by trade. He served as a private in the State militia. Freeholder for Salem Township, New Jersey, 1792. Hufty was elected overseer of the poor and collector of Salem Township, 1793. County justice of Salem County, New Jersey, 1797, county judge in 1798, and county justice and judge, 1804. He served as sheriff 1801–1804. Freeholder of Salem Township 1800–1804. He was a director of the Board of Chosen Freeholders, 1801. He served as a member of the New Jersey Legislative Council (now the New Jersey Senate) in 1804, 1806, and 1807. He was a county collector from 1805 to 1808. The Federalists ran a mixed ticket consisting of 2 Federalists (Aaron Ogden and John Beatty) and 4 Democratic-Republicans (William Helms, Ebenezer Elmer, George Maxwell, and Adam Boyd), one of whom (William Helms) was also on the Democratic-Republican ticket. The Federalists capitalized on resentment over the replacement on the official Democratic-Republican ticket of Ebenezer Elmer, from South Jersey, with Thomas Newbold from Monmouth County and the retention of James Sloan. This ticket was formed too late to gain sufficient support, but the Federalists did do much better in state elections that year than they had in previous elections. Thomas Newbold (August 2, 1760 – December 18, 1823) was a U.S. Democratic-Republican politician. He was born in Springfield Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. He engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly in 1797. He then became involved in banking. He was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the United States House of Representatives from New Jersey and served from March 4, 1807, to March 3, 1813, but was not re-elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1812. He again was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from 1820 to 1822. He died in Springfield Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. He was interred in the Old Upper Springfield Friends Burying Ground. Henry Southard
Henry Southard (October 7, 1747 – May 22, 1842) was a United States Representative from the state of New Jersey. Southard was born in Hempstead, Long Island, New York. He moved with his parents to Basking Ridge, New Jersey in 1755, where he attended the common schools and worked on a farm. Later, Southard served as a private and later as wagon master during the American Revolution. After the war, he engaged in agriculture, before serving as a Justice of the Peace from 1787 to 1792. Later, he served as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly, from 1797 to 1799 and again in 1811. He was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the 7th United States Congress and to the four succeeding Congresses, where he served from March 4, 1801 to March 3, 1811.
