James Cunningham, 14th Earl Of Glencairn
James Cunningham, 14th Earl of Glencairn (1 June 174930 January 1791) was a Scottish nobleman, soldier and patron of Robert Burns. Biography James the second son of William, 13th Earl, was born in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire. On the death ''vida patris'' of his elder brother William in 1768, he became Lord Kilmaurs; he succeeded to the Earldom, while on a tour of Norway, Lapland and Sweden, when his father died on 9 September 1775. A Captain in the Western Fencibles Regiment from 1778, he served as one of the 16 representative peers from 1780 to 1784 and supported Fox's India Bill in 1783. In 1786 he sold his ancient family estate and former seat of Kilmaurs (the Cunninghams having moved their seat to Finlaystone in the 13th century) to Henrietta Scott later to become the Marchioness of Titchfield. James Graeme (poet)
James Graeme (15 December 1749 – 26 July 1772) was a Scottish poet. Life Graeme was born 15 December 1749, at Carnwath in Lanarkshire, the fourth and youngest son of William Graeme, a farmer of the middle class. As a child he was delicate, and his parents educated him for the ministry. After being taught to read in a dame's school, he was sent to the grammar schools of Carnwath, Libberton, and Lanark. In 1767 he went to the University of Edinburgh, where he studied for three years. His friend and biographer, Robert Anderson (1750–1830), says that he excelled in classical learning, and made a special study of metaphysics, besides reading widely in general literature. In 1769 he was presented to a bursary at the University of St Andrews, but soon resigned it, and, returning to Edinburgh next year, entered the theological class. In 1771 he became tutor to the sons of Major Martin White of Milton, near Lanark. He died of tuberculosis at Carnwath on 26 July 1772. Works His poe ... Hugo Arnot
Hugo Arnot of Balcormo (8 December 1749 – 20 November 1786) was a Scottish advocate, writer, and campaigner. Life Arnot was born Hugo Pollock on 8 December 1749 in Leith, where his father was a merchant. He adopted his mother's maiden name, Arnot, after succeeding to her property of Balcormo in Fife. He became an advocate on 5 December 1772. From at least 1773 until his death he lived on Princes Street, where he was one of its first residents. In 1779 he published his ''History of Edinburgh'' with a second issue with added illustrations later in the year, a second edition appeared in 1788 and a third in 1816. Arnot quoted from manuscript sources in Edinburgh City Archives and the National Records of Scotland including a household book of James IV and the accounts of Robert Jousie. Charles Smith (artist)
Charles Smith (7 November 1749 – 19 December 1824) was a Scottish artist who worked initially as a painter of portraits but later also painted mythological and whimsical subjects. History Smith was born on 7 November 1749 in Stenness on the Orkney Isles. His father was William Smith and his mother, Charlotte Whitefoord, was sister to Caleb Whitefoord, a diplomat and political satirist. He attended the Royal Academy Schools before moving to London to establish himself as an artist under the tutelage of J. H. Mortimer. He exhibited three portraits at the Society of Artists in 1776 but it seems that his strong political convictions, sometimes violently expressed, limited his work. In 1783, influenced by the experiences of Tilly Kettle, Smith left England for India. Daniel Rutherford
Daniel Rutherford (3 November 1749 – 15 December 1819) was a Scottish physician, chemist and botanist who is known for the isolation of nitrogen in 1772. Life Rutherford was born on 3 November 1749, the son of Anne Mackay and Professor John Rutherford (1695–1779). He began college at the age of 16 at Mundell's School on the West Bow close to his family home, and then studied medicine under William Cullen and Joseph Black at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with a doctorate (MD) in 1772. From 1775 to 1786 he practiced as a physician in Edinburgh. In 1783 he was a joint founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was president of the Harveian Society in 1787. At this time he lived at Hyndford Close on the Royal Mile. He was a professor of botany at the University of Edinburgh and the 5th Regius Keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh from 1786 to 1819. Archibald Skirving
Archibald Skirving (1749 – 19 May 1819) was a Scottish portrait painter. He was born at Athelstaneford near Haddington. Life Archibald was born in Athelstaneford near Haddington the son of Adam Skirving. His younger brother Robert joined the army in later life. All three (father and sons) wrote poetry, but it is Adam who is best remembered as a songwriter. After studying both in Rome and London, he settled in Edinburgh, where he obtained some fame as a portrait-painter. His most successful portraits were executed in crayon. The best known work is his pastel portrait of Robert Burns, executed partly from Nasmyth's famous portrait, and partly from Skirving's recollection of the poet, whom he met, it is said, at Edinburgh in 1786. This portrait was acquired by Sir Theodore Martin and is in the National Burns Collection.
