16th Street Mission (BART Station)
16th Street Mission station is a Bay Area Rapid Transit station located under Mission Street at 16th Street in the Mission District of San Francisco, California. Service at the station began, along with other stations between Montgomery Street Station and the Daly City station, on November 5, 1973. Station design 16th Street Mission station has two escalator and stair banks at the northeast and southwest corners of the intersection, which lead to a mezzanine under the intersection. A single row of faregates connects to a vaulted paid mezzanine centered over the platform area. The station has a single island platform serving two tracks. 24th Street Mission station has an identical design. Both stations have concrete reliefs by William Mitchell on the walls of their entrances, as well as colorful tilework on the mezzanine and platform levels. Mission Street
Mission Street is a north-south arterial thoroughfare in Daly City and San Francisco, California that runs from Daly City's southern border to San Francisco's northeast waterfront. The street and San Francisco's Mission District through which it runs were named for the Spanish Mission Dolores, several blocks away from the modern route. Only the southern half is historically part of El Camino Real, which connected the missions. Part of Mission Street in Daly City is signed as part of State Route 82 (SR 82). Alignment From the south, Mission Street begins as a continuation of SR 82/El Camino Real at the Colma-Daly City border, just south of San Pedro Road. John Joseph "Jos" Sances (born August 18, 1952) is an American artist, activist, writer, and community organizer, known for his printmaking, and tile murals/public art . He is the founder and director of Alliance Graphics. Sances is based in Berkeley, California. Biography John Joseph Sances was born August 18, 1952 in Boston, Massachusetts to a Sicilian-American family. He studied at Montserrat School of Visual Arts (now Montserrat College of Art). He came to California in 1976 and became active in art and politics. In the last 1970s, Sance was active with the Galería de la Raza and the La Raza Silkscreen Center. In c.1982, Sances co-founded Mission Grafica at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts. In 1989, Sances founded the Alliance Graphics, a Berkeley-based union screen print shop. William Mitchell (sculptor)
William George Mitchell (30 April 1925 – 30 January 2020) was an English sculptor, artist and designer. He is best known for his large scale concrete murals and public works of art from the 1960s and 1970s. His work is often of an abstract or stylised nature with its roots in the traditions of craft and "buildability". His use of heavily modelled surfaces created a distinctive language for his predominantly concrete and glass reinforced concrete (GRC) sculptures. After long years of neglect, many of William Mitchell's remaining works in the United Kingdom are now being recognised for their artistic merit and contemporary historic value, and have been granted protective, listed status. Relief
Relief is a sculptural method in which the sculpted pieces are bonded to a solid background of the same material. The term ''relief'' is from the Latin verb ''relevo'', to raise. To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. When a relief is carved into a flat surface of stone (relief sculpture) or wood (relief carving), the field is actually lowered, leaving the unsculpted areas seeming higher. The approach requires a lot of chiselling away of the background, which takes a long time. On the other hand, a relief saves forming the rear of a subject, and is less fragile and more securely fixed than a sculpture in the round, especially one of a standing figure where the ankles are a potential weak point, particularly in stone. Daly City (BART Station)
Daly City station is an elevated Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station in Daly City, California, just south of the city limits of San Francisco. It is adjacent to Interstate 280 and California Route 1, which it serves as a park-and-ride station. From its November 5, 1973 opening until the extension to Colma station in 1996, Daly City was the southern terminus of BART on the Peninsula and the only station that was not in one of the three base counties of San Francisco, Alameda and Contra Costa. It still serves as the terminus for some services that do not continue to the other San Mateo County stations.
