Christian IV Of Denmark
Christian IV (12 April 1577 – 28 February 1648) was King of Denmark and Norway and Duke of Holstein and Schleswig from 1588 until his death in 1648. His reign of 59 years, 330 days is the longest of Danish monarchs and Scandinavian monarchies. A member of the House of Oldenburg, Christian began his personal rule of Denmark in 1596 at the age of 19. He is remembered as one of the most popular, ambitious, and proactive Danish kings, having initiated many reforms and projects. Christian IV obtained for his kingdom a level of stability and wealth that was virtually unmatched elsewhere in Europe. He engaged Denmark in numerous wars, most notably the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), which devastated much of Germany, undermined the Danish economy, and cost Denmark some of its conquered territories. Prince Ulrik John of Denmark, (Koldinghus Palace, Kolding, 30 December 1578 – 27 March 1624, Rühn) was a son of King Frederick II of Denmark and his consort, Sophie of Mecklenburg-Güstrow. As the second-born son he bore the merely titular rank of ''Duke of Holstein and Schleswig, Stormarn and Ditmarsh'' and had no share in the royal-ducal condominial rule of Holstein and Schleswig, wielded by the heads of the houses of Oldenburg (royal) and its cadet branch Holstein-Gottorp (ducal). Since 1602 he held the religiously defunct position of ''Bishop of Schleswig'', enjoying the revenues of the implied estates and manor. Jørgen Knudsen Urne (17 October 1598 – 19 February 1642) was a Danish noble who served as '' Rigsmarsk'' from 1632 to 1642. Biography The son of Knud Axelsen Urne and Margrethe Eilertsdatter Grubbe, Jørgen Knudsen Urne was born on 17 October 1598 at Halsted Abbey which his father held as a fief. When he was nine, he was sent to Herlufsholm boarding school in Næstved and at age 12 he became a Squire first at the court of Queen Anne Catherine and then to King Christian IV. In this capacity, he participated in the Kalmar War and joined the king on his journeys to England in 1614 and Braunschweig in 1615. He became a Junker in 1618 but then went to Bohemia to serve in the war. The Count of Thurn made him a cornet and he participated in the Battle of White Mountain in 1620 before returning home to become a lieutenant in the Royal Danish Army. Kirsten Munk (sometimes "Christina Munk"; 6 July 1598 19 April 1658) was a Danish noble, the second spouse of King Christian IV of Denmark, and mother to twelve of his children. Early life and morganatic marriage Kirsten Munk was the daughter of Ludvig Munk (1537–1602) and Ellen Marsvin (1572–1649), members of the wealthy but untitled Danish nobility. Her mother, widowed a second time in 1611, was the greatest landowner on Funen. Prior to yielding Kirsten to the evident desires of King Christian, her mother negotiated that, because Kirsten was a member of the nobility and not a commoner, she would become his wife rather than his mistress, and that she receive properties in her own name as tokens of the king's honourable intentions. Anne Lykke
Anne Lykke (30 April 1595 – 1641) was a Danish noblewoman and royal mistress of Christian, Prince Elect of Denmark. Early life Anne Henriksdatter Lykke was born into one of Denmark's more prosperous noble families. She was the daughter of the noble statesman Henrik Lykke (1555–1611) and Karen Frandsdatter Banner (1559–1616). She was born at Vordingborg Castle, where her father was sheriff. During 1615, Anne married nobleman Cai Rantzau (1591–1623), governor of several royal palaces. In 1616, her only child, daughter Sophie, (1616–1635) was born at Copenhagen Castle where Rantzau was sheriff. Ove Gjedde (27 December 1594 – 19 December 1660) was a Danish nobleman and Admiral of the Realm (''Rigsadmiral''). He established the Danish colony at Tharangambadi (Danish: ''Trankebar'') and constructed Fort Dansborg as the base for Danish settlement.
