John, King Of Denmark
John (Danish, Norwegian and sv, Hans; né ''Johannes'') (2 February 1455 – 20 February 1513) was a Scandinavian monarch under the Kalmar Union. He was king of Denmark (1481–1513), Norway (1483–1513) and as John II ( sv, Johan II) Sweden (1497–1501). From 1482 to 1513, he was concurrently duke of Schleswig and Holstein in joint rule with his brother Frederick. The three most important political goals of King John were the restoration of the Kalmar Union, reduction of the dominance of the Hanseatic League, and the building of a strong Danish royal power. Biography Early life John was born at Aalborghus Castle, in the city of Aalborg in Northern Jutland. Battle Of Hemmingstedt
The Battle of Hemmingstedt took place on 17 February 1500 south of the village of Hemmingstedt, near the present village of Epenwöhrden, in the western part of present-day Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It was an attempt by King John of Denmark and his brother Duke Frederick, who were co-dukes of Schleswig and Holstein, to subdue the peasantry of Dithmarschen, who had established a peasants' republic on the coast of the North Sea. John was at the time also king of the Kalmar Union. Forces The ducal army consisted of the "Great Guard", 4,000 Landsknechts, commanded by a petty noble (Junker) named Thomas Slentz, 2,000 armoured cavaliers, about 1,000 artillerymen, and 5,000 commoners. Eskil Gøye
Eskil Gøye (also spelled Eskild; died 20 April 1506) was a Danish nobleman, statesman and landholder. He served as Marshal of the Realm (Denmark), Marshal of the Realm from 1489 to 1502. He was the father of Mogens Gøye and Henrik Gøye. Early life Gøye was the son of Mogens Axelsen Gøye (died 1450 or later) and Ide Eskilsdatter Falk. He is mentioned as a knight in 1459. Property He inherited Krenkerup on Lolland and Gisselfeld on Zealand. He also owned Tunbyholm Castle, Tunbyholm in Skåne. He was ''lensmann, lensmand'' of Aalholm on Lolland (from c. 1473 to 1494) and Lindholmen Castle, Lindholm in Skåne (from 1495). In c. 1493, he acquired Torsjö in Skåne as mortgage. Marshal Of The Realm (Denmark)
The Marsk (English: Marshal), from 1536 the Rigsmarsk, was in Denmark the head of the armed forces from the beginning of the 13th century until the introduction of the absolute monarchy in the 1660s. It was the third highest office in the country after the Steward of the Realm and the Chancellor. The Rigsmarsk was appointed by the king from among Danish-born nobles. During some periods, the king chose to leave the office vacant and instead personally lead the military. This was the case from 1380/81 and until 1440. In the beginning the Marsk was one of the king's men and Stig Andersen Hvide used the title ''Regis Danorum Marscalcus'' ("Marshal of the Danish King") shortly before his conviction in 1287 for the murder of King Eric V. Christian III Of Denmark
Christian III (12 August 1503 – 1 January 1559) reigned as King of Denmark from 1534 and King of Norway from 1537 until his death in 1559. During his reign, Christian formed close ties between the church and the crown. He established Lutheranism as the state religion within his realms as part of the Protestant Reformation. Childhood Christian was the eldest son of the future king, Frederick I of Denmark, and Anna of Brandenburg. He was born at Gottorf Castle in Schleswig which Frederick I had made as a primary residence. In 1514, when he was just ten years old, Christian's mother died. Hans Svaning
Hans Svaning (1503 – 20 September 1584) was a Danish historian. Biography Svaning was born at the village of Svaninge on Funen. He attended Vor Frue skole in Copenhagen and the University of Wittenberg graduating in 1529 and in 1533 receiving his master's degree. Between 1541–52, he was the tutor of Prince Frederick, later King Frederick II of Denmark and became a royal historiographer in 1553. In 1539 he became professor of rhetoric at the University of Copenhagen. In 1547, he received the deanery at Ribe. His main work was a complete Danish history in Latin, ''Danmarkshistorie'', which was completed in manuscript in 1579 and stored in the University of Copenhagen Library but lost in the Copenhagen Fire of 1728 The Copenhagen Fire of 1728 was the largest fire in the history of Copenhagen, Denmark. Peder Palladius
Peder Palladius (1503–1560) was a Danish theologian, Protestant reformer, and bishop of Zealand. As the first protestant bishop in Denmark, he oversaw the conversion of ecclesiastic affairs. He helped create the church ordinance which founded the Church of Denmark, produced a Danish translation of the Bible, and removed Catholic images and rituals from his diocese. Early life and education Peder was born in Ribe in 1503. Little information is known about his childhood. Palladius’ own published account of his childhood suggests that he grew up near Ribe and attended school there ca. 1510–1515. He describes his father, Esbern Jensen, as a devout layman. Though his father was illiterate, he had memorised much of the gospel and chastised his son when he failed to recite them properly. Peder had a younger brother, Niels Palladius, who was born in 1510.
