1500 Metres At The World Championships In Athletics
The 1500 metres at the World Championships in Athletics has been contested by both men and women since the inaugural edition in 1983. Hicham El Guerrouj ( ar, هشام الݣروج, Hishām l-Garrūj; ber, ⵀⵉⵛⴰⵎ ⴻⵍ ⴳⴻⵔⵔⵓⵊ, Hisham El Gerruj; born 14 September 1974) is a retired Moroccan middle-distance runner. El Guerrouj is the current world record holder of the outdoor 1500 metres, mile, and 2000 metres events. He also held indoor world records for the mile and 1500 metres until 2019, and is the only man since Paavo Nurmi to earn a gold medal in both the 1500 metres and 5000 metres at the same Olympic Games. Tetyana Apaycheva (née Khamitova, Divorced Samolenko and Dorovskykh, ua, Тетяна Володимирівна Апайчева, née Хамітова, born 12 August 1961) is a Ukrainian retired middle-distance runner who represented the Soviet Union until 1991, the Unified Team in 1992, and later Ukraine. She is the 1988 Olympic champion in the 3000 metres. Career As Tetyana Samolenko, she was the leading female middle-distance runner of the late 1980s. She is the 1988 Olympic champion at 3000 metres, the 1987 World champion at both 1500 metres and 3000 metres, and the 1987 World Indoor champion at 3000 metres. Anita Weyermann (born 8 December 1977 in Wynigen) is a Swiss former middle- and long-distance runner. , Sandra Gasser (born 27 July 1962 in Bern) is a retired Swiss track and field athlete who specialised in middle distance running. After the 1987 World Championships, where she achieved third place in the 1500 metres, she failed a doping test and was disqualified. Jake Wightman (born 11 July 1994) is a British middle-distance runner competing primarily in the 1500 metres. He won the gold medal at the 2022 World Championships, the first global gold in a middle distance event for a British male since Seb Coe's 1500 m title at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Stephen Cram, (born 14 October 1960) is a British retired track and field athlete. Along with fellow Britons Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett, he was one of the world's dominant middle distance runners during the 1980s. Nicknamed "The Jarrow Arrow", after his home town, Cram set world records in the 1,500 m, 2,000 m, and the mile during a 19-day period in the summer of 1985.
