11 Division (Sri Lanka)
The 11th Division is an division of the Sri Lanka Army. Based at the Pallekele, it is responsible for the maintenance of capability for the defence of Kandy. It is also responsible for carrying out training and administrative work. It was established April 4, 1988, as 1st Division at the Panagoda Cantonment and was remanded the 11 Division in 1997. Division (military)
A division is a large military unit or Formation (military), formation, usually consisting of between 6,000 and 25,000 soldiers. In most armies, a division is composed of several regiments or brigades; in turn, several divisions typically make up a corps. Historically, the division has been the default combined arms unit capable of independent Military tactics, operations. Pallekele ( si, පල්ලෙකැලේ) is a suburb of the city of Kandy in Kandy District, Central Province, Sri Lanka, Central Province, Sri Lanka. Panagoda Cantonment
Panagoda Cantonment is a cantonment located in the western Western Province, Sri Lanka, Western Province of Sri Lanka. It serves as the regimental headquarters of many regiments of the Sri Lanka Army and is an arsenal. It also houses one of the main Military Hospitals operated by the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps. 111 Brigade (Sri Lanka)
The 111 Brigade is a formation of the Sri Lanka Army. The Brigade is responsible for the defense of the City of Kandy and the central province at large. It was formerly known as the Area Headquarters Kandy and was renamed in 2011 coming under the 11th Division. It traces its roots to the Central Commander's Headquarters which was established in 1972 following the 1971 Insurrection under the command of Colonel E.J Divitotawela. In 1988, it was renamed as the 12 Division followed with another re-designation in 32 Division until it became known as the Area Headquarters on 23 October 1996.
