119th New York Volunteer Infantry
The 119th New York Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service Colonel (United States), Colonel Elias Peissner received authority, June 26, 1862, to recruit 119th New York Infantry was organized at New York City, New York (state), New York beginning June 26, 1862 and mustered in for three years service on September 4, 1862 under the command of Elias Peissner. The companies were recruited principally: * A — Halleck Guard * B, C, D — Sigel Life Guard, Siegel Sharpshooters * E, F, G, I and K — New York City * H — Hempstead The regiment was considered one of the German, or "Dutch," regiments in the XI Corps (Union Army), XI Corps. Service The 120th New York Infantry was organized at Kingston, New York, and mustered in for three years service on August 22, 1862, under the command of Colonel George Henry Sharpe. The 118th New York Infantry Regiment was recruited for service in the American Civil War (1861–1865) from Clinton, Essex, and Warren counties in Northern New York. Known as the ''Adirondack Regiment'', the unit saw service along the Atlantic Coast in the Department of Virginia before transferring to the Army of the James in 1864. With the latter, they were engaged in the Overland Campaign and the subsequent siege of Petersburg. History Col. Samuel T. Richards received authority on July 7, 1862, to organize an infantry regiment of men from Clinton, Essex, and Warren counties. John Thomas Lockman
John Thomas Lockman (September 26, 1834 – September 27, 1912) was an American lawyer and soldier who was brevetted Brigadier General for his efforts for the Union Army in the U.S. Civil War. Early life Lockman was born on September 26, 1834, in New York City. He was the son of Isaac Paul Lockman (1798–1871) and Mary (née Kennedy) Lockman (1804–1902). Among his siblings was the attorney Jacob Kennedy Lockman (father of prominent portrait painter DeWitt McClellan Lockman), Sarah H. Lockman (wife of John Flaacke); Isaac Paul Lockman (who contracted malaria during the Civil War); and Katherine Ann Elizabeth Lockman. His paternal grandparents were Jacob Lockman and Catherine (née Paul) Lockman, and his maternal grandparents were Thomas H. Kennedy, an intimate friend of Scottish poet Robert Burns, and Margaret Kennedy, both of whom were born in Scotland. Colonel (United States)
The colonel () in the United States Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Space Force, is the most senior field-grade military officer rank, immediately above the rank of lieutenant colonel and just below the rank of brigadier general. Colonel is equivalent to the naval rank of captain in the other uniformed services. By law, an officer previously required at least 22 years of cumulative service and a minimum of three years as a lieutenant colonel before being promoted to colonel. With the signing of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2019 (NDAA 2019), military services now have the authorization to directly commission new officers up to the rank of colonel.
