103 Squadron (Portugal)
The 103 Squadron "''Caracóis''" (''Esquadra 103'') is a jet advanced training squadron of the Portuguese Air Force. Prior to 1978, the "''Caracóis''" also received following designations: 22 Squadron, ''Esquadra de Instrução Complementar de Pilotagem'' (EICP) and ''Esquadra de Instrução Complementar de Pilotagem em Aviões de Combate'' (EICPAC). Roles and missions Its primary mission is the complementary flying training on jet aircraft and operational transition training. History The origins of 103 Squadron date back to 1953 with the beginning of the operational service of the Lockheed T-33A Shooting Star and later that same year with the delivery of the first jet fighters, the Republic F-84G Thunderjet, in service with the Portuguese Air Force (PoAF). Republic F-84G Thunderjet
The Republic F-84 Thunderjet was an American turbojet fighter-bomber aircraft. Originating as a 1944 United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) proposal for a "day fighter", the F-84 first flew in 1946. Although it entered service in 1947, the Thunderjet was plagued by so many structural and engine problems that a 1948 U.S. Air Force review declared it unable to execute any aspect of its intended mission and considered canceling the program. The aircraft was not considered fully operational until the 1949 F-84D model and the design matured only with the definitive F-84G introduced in 1951. In 1954, the straight-wing Thunderjet was joined by the swept-wing F-84F Thunderstreak fighter and RF-84F Thunderflash photo reconnaissance aircraft. The () was a flight demonstration team created in 1977 integrated with ''Esquadra'' 103 (103 Squadron) of the Portuguese Air Force. It was Portugal's national aerobatic flying team and flew two ex-German Air Force Dassault-Breguet/Dornier Alpha Jets. History In 1977, Asas de Portugal was created by order of the Air Force Chief of Staff (CEMFA), with the objective to represent the Portuguese Air Force (PoAF) at the International Air Tattoo air festival. This was the third aerobatics team established by the PoAF, after two teams of the 1950s — the '' Dragões'' (Dragons) and the ''São Jorge'' (Saint George) teams. Monte Real Air Base, officially designated as Air Force Base No. 5 ( pt, Base Aérea Nº 5, BA5), is a Portuguese Air Force (PoAF) air base located in Monte Real, Leiria, Portugal.
