1st Parliament Of Singapore
The 1st Parliament of Singapore was a meeting of the Parliament of Singapore. It commenced its first and only session on 8 December 1965 and was dissolved on 8 February 1968. The members of the 1st Parliament had been elected in the 1963 general election to the 3rd Legislative Assembly of Singapore, which was renamed as the Parliament of Singapore following Singapore's independence in 1965. Parliament was controlled by a People's Action Party majority, led by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and his Cabinet. Arumugam Ponnu Rajah
Arumugam Ponnu Rajah (7 July 1911 – 28 September 1999), also known as A. P. Rajah, was a Singaporean judge, diplomat and politician who served as Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore between 1964 and 1966. Rajah also served as Singapore High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and later Singapore High Commissioner to Australia. He was Singapore's first Supreme Court judge to remain on the bench after turning 70. Education Rajah received his early education at St. Paul's Institution and Raffles Institution. In 1932, he attended University of Oxford where he received a law degree. He was later conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by the National University of Singapore (NUS) on 14 November 1984. Bukit Panjang SMC
The Bukit Panjang Single Member Constituency is a Single Member Constituency (SMC) located in the western area of Singapore. The current Member of Parliament for the constituency is Liang Eng Hwa of the People's Action Party (PAP) . History The seat consists the main portion of Bukit Panjang (Blks 101-129, 2xx and 4xx Fajar) and was reformed in the 2006 electoral boundary redraw. Bukit Panjang SMC existed from 1959 to 1991 when it was absorbed into the Sembawang Group Representation Constituency (GRC). In 2001, the seat was moved from Sembawang GRC to Holland–Bukit Panjang GRC. The 2006 redrawn boundaries carved out Bukit Panjang to form the current constituency and the GRC was renamed Holland–Bukit Timah GRC. Chan Choy Siong
Chan Choy Siong (; 1931 – 11 February 1981) was a Singaporean politician and women's rights activist. Chan was one of the first women to be elected to the Parliament. Biography Chan grew up in Chinatown. She attended Nanyang Girls' High School, but was unable to complete her studies due to financial constraints. Her father supported her pursuit of an education. At the age of 20, Chan joined the People's Action Party (PAP), and was committed to securing equal rights for women in Singapore, including equality in pay and for an end to legal polygamy. In 1956, along with Ho Puay Choo and Oh Siew Chen, Chan created the Women's League within the PAP. She was subsequently co-opted into the party's Central Executive Committee (CEC) in 1957. Chua Chu Kang Single Member Constituency was a single member constituency (SMC) located in the western region of Singapore. The constituency encompasses Choa Chu Kang New Town. It is one of the longest existing constituencies in Singapore, spanning 52 years from 1959 to 2011. Lim Kim San
Lim Kim San ( zh, c=林金山, p=Lín Jīnshān; 30 November 1916 – 20 July 2006) was a Singaporean politician who served as a Cabinet minister between 1965 and 1981. He was credited for leading a successful public housing programme in the country during the early 1960s, which eased the acute housing shortage problem at that time. Early life and education Born in 1916 in Singapore, Lim was the eldest of six children. He was educated at Oldham Hall School and Anglo-Chinese School before graduating from Raffles College in 1939 with a Diploma in Arts in economics. It used to exist from 1955 to 1988 as Cairnhill Constituency and was renamed as Cairnhill Single Member Constituency (SMC) as part of Singapore's political reforms.
