1999–2000 Huddersfield Town A.F.C. Season
This page documents Huddersfield Town's 1999–2000 season. Following the sacking of Peter Jackson at the end of the previous season, owner Barry Rubery hired Steve Bruce as his replacement, and Huddersfield finished in 8th place in Division One that season, just 2 points outside the play-offs. This season also saw Town beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the League Cup. Squad at the start of the season Review Rubery and managing director Ian Ayre talked up the side's chances of promotion, pointing to the acquisition of the high-profile Steve Bruce as a clear indication of their ambition. More serious investment brought the likes of Clyde Wijnhard, Chris Lucketti, Giorgos Donis, Scott Sellars, Kenny Irons, Ken Monkou and Dean Gorré to the club. Huddersfield Town A
Huddersfield is a market town in the Kirklees district in West Yorkshire, England. It is the administrative centre and largest settlement in the Kirklees district. The town is in the foothills of the Pennines. The River Holme's confluence into the similar-sized Colne to the south of the town centre which then flows into the Calder in the north eastern outskirts of the town. The rivers around the town provided soft water required for textile treatment in large weaving sheds, this made it a prominent mill town with an economic boom in the early part of the Victorian era Industrial Revolution. The town centre has much neoclassical Victorian architecture, one example is which is a Grade I listed building – described by John Betjeman as "the most splendid station façade in England" – and won the Europa Nostra award for architecture. Marcus Stewart
William Marcus Paul Stewart (''né'' Tubbs; born 8 November 1972) is an English former professional footballer who played as a forward from 1991 until 2011. He is currently Head of Player Development at Yeovil Town. Stewart played over 500 games and scored over 250 goals in his professional career and had notable spells in the Premier League for Ipswich Town and Sunderland, and was the Premier League's second highest goalscorer for the 2000–01 season. He also played for Bristol Rovers, Huddersfield Town, Bristol City, Preston North End, Yeovil Town and Exeter City. Playing career Stewart signed for Bristol Rovers in 1991, where he played as a regular striker. He had played for England schoolboys. Kenny Irons (footballer)
Kenneth Irons (born 4 November 1970) is an English former professional footballer who made more than 500 appearances in the Football League playing for Tranmere Rovers and Huddersfield Town. He was signed up as a trainee at Tranmere Rovers in 1989, where he made nearly 400 appearances for them in 10 years, before moving to Steve Bruce's Huddersfield Town side for £500,000 in 1999. He brought steel to the Terriers' side and is most remembered by Town fans for his 35-yard thunderbolt goal that defeated Gianluca Vialli's Chelsea side 1–0 in the 3rd round of the League Cup at Stamford Bridge. In 2003, he left Town to join Irish Football League side Linfield, where he helped them gain the title during that season. Giorgos Donis
Georgios Donis ( el, Γεώργιος Δώνης; born 22 October 1969) is a Greek former professional footballer who played as a midfielder and currently a manager. He is the current manager of Saudi Arabian club Al-Fateh. He was the first ever Greek to play in the English Premier League. In England, he was also known as George Donis. Early years Donis was born and raised in Frankfurt, West Germany until he was six years old and the family moved back to their native Greece. His parents had lived in Frankfurt for "many years" and he has still family ties there. Kevin Gray (footballer)
Kevin John Gray (born 7 January 1972) is an English former footballer, who played as a defender in the Football League for Mansfield Town, Huddersfield Town, Stockport County (on loan), Tranmere Rovers, Carlisle United and Chesterfield. Football career He started his career at Mansfield Town signing as a trainee in July 1990 and had a successful four-year period at Mansfield. In 1994 Gray joined Huddersfield Town at the newly built Galpharm Stadium and played there for eight years and played just under 300 games for Huddersfield and he played one game on loan at Stockport County in 2000. While at Huddersfield, Gray tackled Bradford City striker Gordon Watson in February 1997, the sliding tackle broke Watson's leg in two places and left his career in tatters. Chris Lucketti
Christopher James Lucketti (born 28 September 1971) is an English football manager and former professional player, who is assistant manager of Bradford City. He played as a central defender. In a playing career of over 600 games, Lucketti began his career at home town club Rochdale in 1989 before moving to Halifax Town, Bury- for whom he made over 250 appearances - Preston North End, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United. After his playing career ended, Lucketti moved into coaching and management with roles including assistant manager at Scunthorpe United and Salford City alongside Graham Alexander, caretaker manager of Fleetwood Town and manager at Bury. Steven Craig Armstrong (born 23 May 1975) is an English former professional footballer, manager and academy recruitment manager Premier League side Crystal Palace. Jamie Vincent
Jamie Roy Vincent (18 June 1975 – 16 January 2022) was an English professional footballer who played as a defender. Career Vincent was spotted by Mick Beard then Wimbledon where he played most of his youth football, before he began his career with Crystal Palace. At Palace he scored his first professional goal in a League Cup game against Southend United in October 1995. However, after a successful loan period at AFC Bournemouth, he signed and made over 100 league starts. Later he moved to Huddersfield Town for £500,000 before being sold on to Portsmouth for £800,000, where he scored once against Barnsley. He subsequently moved to Derby County and Yeovil Town. Steve Jenkins
Stephen Robert Jenkins (born 16 July 1972) is a former Wales international footballer. A full back, he won 16 Welsh caps between 1995 and 2001. He began his career at Swansea, where he was a part of the team that won the 1994 Football League Trophy Final after a penalty shootout. After a seven-year spell at Huddersfield Town, in which he became not only the captain but a well established fans' favourite, Jenkins signed for Swindon Town in 2005, but after Swindon's relegation to League Two and the appointment of Dennis Wise as manager, Jenkins' offer of a new deal at the County Ground was withdrawn and he was released. Nico Vaesen
Nico-Jos Theodoor Vaesen (born 28 September 1969) is a Belgian former footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He retired from football shortly after joining Lierse, but returned to the game in 2008 with K.F.C. Verbroedering Geel for one season where his contract wasn't renewed. Career Born in Hasselt, Belgium, Vaesen spent his first professional season at Belgian sides Cercle Brugge and K.S.C. Eendracht Aalst, and on 21 May 1998 moved to English side Huddersfield Town. He was sent off on his debut, but went on to play 135 league games. During his first season for the club, he won the club's Supporters' Player of the Year.
