1999 Tucson Mayoral Election
The 1999 Tucson mayoral election occurred on November 2, 1999 to elect the mayor of Tucson, and occurred coinciding with the elections to the Tucson City Council wards 1, 2 and 4. It saw the election of Bob Walkup. Incumbent mayor George Miller did not seek reelection to a third term. Nominations Primaries were held for the Democratic, Libertarian, and Republican parties on September 7, 1999. Bob Walkup
Robert E. Walkup (November 14, 1936 – March 12, 2021) was an American politician who served as the 40th List of mayors of Tucson, Arizona, mayor of Tucson from 1999 to 2011. Early life and career Walkup was born in Ames, Iowa, on November 14, 1936. His father was a professor of engineering at Iowa State University. He obtained a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Iowa State University, before serving in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, US Army Corps of Engineers. Upon his return from military service, he worked in the aerospace industry for 35 years. He was employed by Rockwell International, Fairchild Aircraft, Fairchild Republic, and Hughes Aircraft, Hughes Aircraft Company. While working at Rockwell International, Fairchild Republic, he oversaw the production of the Fairchild Republic Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, A-10 Thunderbolt II. George Miller (Arizona Politician)
George Miller (October 24, 1922December 25, 2014) was an American politician who served as the mayor of Tucson, Arizona from 1991 until December 6, 1999. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He received both a bachelor's degree and master's degree in political science from the University of Arizona. Miller served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was shot in the right leg during the Battle of Saipan. Miller served on the Tucson city council for fourteen years prior to becoming mayor in 1991. After serving as mayor for two terms, Miller declined to run again, and was succeeded by Bob Walkup on December 6, 1999. At the time of his retirement Miller was Tucson's longest serving public official, having spent twenty-two consecutive years in office: fourteen years as a city councilman and eight as mayor. Lewis Curtis "Lew" Murphy (November 2, 1933 – December 1, 2005) was a US Air Force pilot, lawyer, and politician. He served sixteen years as Mayor of Tucson, Arizona. Biography Murphy was born in New York City on November 2, 1933, to H. Waldo and Elizabeth (Curtis) Murphy. He grew up in Clinton, Iowa, the home of his mother. He later attended Shattuck Military Academy in Faribault, Minnesota. From 1950 to 1955 Murphy attended the University of Arizona, receiving a bachelor's degree in business administration. While in college he met Carol Carney, granddaughter of Zane Grey. The two married in 1957. Murphy was in US Air Force from 1955 to 1958. He flew B-26 bombers while stationed in Japan. In 1958 Murphy returned to Tucson, earning a law degree in 1961. He was a trust officer at Southern Arizona Bank & Trust Co. from 1966 to 1970.
