1999 Parramatta Eels Season
The 1999 Parramatta Eels season was the 53rd in the club's history. Coached by Brian Smith and captained by Jarrod McCracken and Nathan Cayless, they competed in the National Rugby League's 1999 Telstra Premiership. Summary Parramatta continued their success and consistency into the second year of the new National Rugby League, finishing two points behind Minor Premiers Cronulla. Parramatta kicked off their finals series with a comfortable 30–16 win against Newcastle at Parramatta Stadium. However Parramatta could not back up that performance against Melbourne, after having a week off. Similar to the 1998 preliminary final loss to Canterbury, Parramatta lead the match 16-0 early before going into the half-time break winning 16-6. With the exclusion of the Adelaide Rams and Gold Coast Chargers, and the joint venture of the St. George Dragons and Illawarra Steelers, seventeen teams competed for the NRL Premiership during the 1999 season, which culminated in the first grand final to be played at Stadium Australia. Nathan Frederick Cayless (born 28 March 1978) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s, and has coached in the 2010s. He played at representative level for New Zealand (captain), and at club level in the National Rugby League (NRL) for the Parramatta Eels, for whom he was a long-time captain, as a . Luke Burt
Luke Kevin Burt (born 6 June 1981) is a professional rugby league coach who was the interim co-coach of the Gold Coast Titans in the NRL, and an Australian former professional rugby league footballer. Burt and Craig Hodges were replaced by Justin Holbrook as head coach just before 2020 NRL season commenced. He was the assistant coach at the Titans under previous head coach Garth Brennan. Michael Vella
Michael Vella is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. A New South Wales State of Origin and Australian international representative forward, he played his club football in the NRL for the Parramatta Eels, and in the Super League for Hull Kingston Rovers, who he also captained. David Penna
David Penna (born 25 July 1972) is an Australian rugby league coach and former footballer who played for the Parramatta Eels and the South Sydney Rabbitohs during his long professional career. Penna is the current assistant coach of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. Playing career Penna made his debut for Parramatta in 1990. He played 22 games over four seasons, often at centre or five-eighth. In 1994 he moved to join the South Sydney Rabbitohs and played 56 games for the club over four seasons, usually at centre or fullback. Penna played for Souths in their upset 1994 Tooheys Challenge Cup final victory over Brisbane. In 1998, Penna returned to Parramatta where he was usually used at five-eighth before moving into the halfback position in 1999. Dennis Moran, (born 22 January 1977) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. Newcastle Knights
The Newcastle Knights are an Australian professional rugby league club based in Newcastle, New South Wales. National Rugby League
The National Rugby League (NRL) is an Australasian rugby league club competition which contains clubs from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory and New Zealand. Parramatta Eels
The Parramatta Eels are an Australian professional rugby league football club based in the Sydney suburb of Parramatta that competes in the National Rugby League. The Parramatta District Rugby League Football Club was formed in 1947, and their home ground was Parramatta Stadium (formerly Cumberland Oval). As of 2019, Parramatta's home ground stadium has been rebuilt and they now play as the co-tenants at Western Sydney Stadium, which sits on the same site that was once Parramatta Stadium.
