1999 Nunavut General Election
The 1999 Nunavut general election was the first general election in the territory and was held on 15 February 1999, to elect the members of the 1st Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Although Nunavut did not become a territory until 1 April 1999 the election was held early to enable the members to assume their duties on that date. The territory operates on a consensus government system with no political parties; the premier is subsequently chosen by and from the MLAs. Paul Okalik was chosen to be Premier of Nunavut. Legislative Assembly Of Nunavut
The Legislative Assembly of Nunavut is the legislative assembly for the Canadian territory of Nunavut. The seat of the Assembly is the Legislative Building of Nunavut in Iqaluit. Prior to the creation of Nunavut as a Canadian territory on April 1, 1999, the 1999 Nunavut general election was held on February 15 to determine the 1st Nunavut Legislature. The Legislative Assembly was opened by Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, on October 7, 2002, during her Golden Jubilee tour of Canada. In her speech the Queen stated: "I am proud to be the first member of the Canadian Royal Family to be greeted in Canada's newest territory." Prior to the opening of the Legislative Building in October 1999 the members met in the gymnasium of the Inuksuk High School. Kelvin Ng
Kelvin Ng (born November 10, 1958) is a former territorial and municipal level politician in Canada who was elected in both the Nunavut Legislature and Northwest Territories Legislature. Ng began his political career on the municipal level. He has served on municipal council and as Mayor of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. Ng ran for a seat in the 1995 Northwest Territories general election. He defeated incumbent MLA Ernest Bernhardt to win the Kitikmeot electoral district. Ng served one term in the Northwest Territories Legislature, becoming a cabinet Minister in the government. His district was abolished in 1999 when Nunavut was created from the Northwest Territories. Uriash Puqiqnak
Uriash Puqiqnak, CM (born April 15, 1946) is an experienced soapstone carver and former territorial and municipal level politician in Canada. He served as Mayor of Gjoa Haven, Nunavut and was a member of the Nunavut Legislature from 1999 until 2004. Uriash Puqiqnak briefly served as acting speaker in 2000 after Levi Barnabas' resignation. Carving Puqiqnak is a famous soapstone carver, his works are on display all over Canada. He was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada on July 29, 2005. His work is also featured in ''Keeping our Stories Alive: The Sculpture of Canada's Inuit'' along with the work of Ovilu Tunnillie and Lucy Meeko. Nattilik was a territorial electoral district ( riding) for the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, Canada. The riding consisted of the communities of Gjoa Haven and Taloyoak. Gjoa Haven is now a part of the Gjoa Haven riding and Taloyoak is a part of the Netsilik riding. The seat became vacant as of 22 February due to the resignation of former Member of the Legislative Assembly, Enuk Pauloosie. James Arvaluk
James Arvaluk (April 1948 – April 27, 2016) was a Canadian politician from Coral Harbour, Nunavut. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Northwest Territories from 1991 to 1995 and a member of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut from 1999 to 2003. He served as Nunavut's first Minister of Education. Political career In February 1995 Arvaluk resigned his seat in the NWT Legislative Assembly after being charged with sexual assault. He was convicted of two sexual assaults and sentenced to five years. However, after a successful appeal on one of the two counts he was required to serve only two and a half years. On June 20, 2003 he resigned his seat after being convicted of assault causing bodily harm against his girlfriend in August 2000, for which he served nine months. Donald Havioyak
Donald Havioyak is a territorial-level politician in Canada. He served as a member of the Nunavut Legislature. Havioyak was elected to the Nunavut legislature in the 1999 Nunavut general election. He won the Kugluktuk electoral district with a plurality of six votes defeating three other candidates. Edward "Ed" Walter Picco (born September 21, 1961) is a Canadian politician first elected in the 1995 Northwest Territories election. He was re-elected in the 1999 Nunavut election and in the 2004 Nunavut election. Picco is one of the few Canadian politicians elected to two different legislative assemblies, having been elected in 1995 to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories and in 1999 to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Hunter Tootoo
Hunter A. Tootoo ( Inuktitut: Hᐊᓐᑕ ᑐᑐ; born August 18, 1963) is a Canadian politician who served as the Member of Parliament for Nunavut from 2015 to 2019. Elected as a Liberal to the House of Commons, he was appointed Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard by Justin Trudeau on November 4, 2015. Tootoo resigned from that position on May 31, 2016, to take a leave from Parliament to seek treatment for alcohol addiction. He returned to Parliament by the end of July 2016 after the completion of his treatment program, but sat as an independent member for the remainder of the 42nd Parliament and did not run for re-election.
