1999 Indonesian Presidential Election
Indirect presidential elections were held in Indonesia between 20 and 21 October 1999. The President and Vice President were elected by members of the People's Consultative Assembly and 200 nominated members after the June 1999 legislative elections. Abdurrahman Wahid was elected president on 20 October and was inaugurated on the same day, while Megawati Soekarnoputri was elected vice president the following day. Background In October, the People's Consultative Assembly made up of the People's Representative Council and 200 nominated members from the military and selected civilians, a total of 700, met to elect the President and Vice President. There were initially four candidates for the presidency; Abdurrahman Wahid, B. J. Habibie, Megawati Sukarnoputri, and Yusril Ihza Mahendra. Abdurrahman Wahid
Abdurrahman Wahid ( ; born Abdurrahman ad-Dakhil; 7 September 1940 – 30 December 2009), though more colloquially known as Gus Dur (), was an Indonesian politician and Islamic religious leader who served as the 4th president of Indonesia, from his election in 1999 until his removal from power in 2001. A long time leader within the Nahdlatul Ulama organization, he was the founder of the National Awakening Party (PKB). He was the son of Minister of Religious Affairs Wahid Hasyim, and the grandson of Nahdatul Ulama founder Hasyim Asy'ari. He had a visual impairment caused by glaucoma. He was blind on the left eye and partially blind on his right eye. He was the first and as of 2022 the only president of Indonesia to have had physical disabilities. Diah Permata Megawati Setiawati Sukarnoputri (; born 23 January 1947) is an Indonesian politician who served as the fifth president of Indonesia from 2001 to 2004. She previously served as the eighth vice president from 1999 to 2001. Megawati is Indonesia's first female president and the sixth woman to lead a Muslim-majority country. She is also the first Indonesian president and as of 2021 the only vice president to be born after Indonesia proclaimed its independence in 1945. Yusril Ihza Mahendra
Yusril Ihza Mahendra (born 5 February 1956) is an Indonesian lawyer, politician and academic, who is currently serving as the leader of the Crescent Star Party (PBB) since 2015. Previously, he served as the leader of the PBB from 1998 until 2005, Minister of Justice and Human Rights from 2004 until 2007, and member of the People's Representative Council from 1999 until 2009. Born on 5 February 1956, he attended the University of Indonesia. Graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy. He would go on to work as a speechwriter for presidents Suharto and B. J. Habibie. The inauguration of Abdurrahman Wahid as the fourth president of Indonesia took place on Wednesday, 20 October 1999 at the DPR/MPR Building, Jakarta. The ceremony marked the commencement of Wahid's only term as president. Wahid's term as president only lasted for one year, nine months, and four days, his term ended following his decree to suspend the People's Consultative Assembly and the People's Representative Council on July 23, 2001. 1999 Indonesian Legislative Election
Early legislative elections were held in Indonesia on 7 June 1999.
