1999 IAAF World Indoor Championships
The 7th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics were held in the Green Dome Maebashi stadium in Maebashi, Japan from March 5 to March 7, 1999. It was the first time the Championships were staged outside Europe or North America. Primo Nebiolo, president of the IAAF, characterized the championships as "the greatest ever". There were a total number of 487 participating athletes from 115 countries. Doping disqualifications Four medalists were disqualified for doping; Rostislav Dimitrov of Bulgaria was stripped of the triple jump silver, Inger Miller of the USA was stripped of the 60 metre bronze, Vita Pavlysh of Ukraine was stripped of the shot put gold and Irina Korzhanenko of Russia was stripped of the shot put silver. Charles Michael Friedek (born 26 August 1971 in Gießen) is a German triple jumper who became world champion in 1999 with a jump of 17.59 metres. He had already won the World Indoor Championships the same year, with an indoor PB of 17.18 metres. In 2002, he won a silver medal at the European Championships with 17.33 metres. LaMark Carter (born August 23, 1970 in Shreveport, Louisiana) is an American former triple jumper. His personal best was , achieved in June 1998 in New Orleans. He was the silver medallist at the 1999 IAAF World Indoor Championships and also the 1999 Pan American Games. He was a three-time national champion at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships (1998, 1999 and 2001). He made the USA Olympic Team in 2000 but did not medal in the Sydney Games. Armen Martirosyan ( hy, Արմեն Մարտիրոսյան, born 6 August 1969 in Leninakan, Shirak, Armenian SSR) is a retired Armenian triple jumper. Rogel Nachum (or Nahum, he, רוגל נחום; born 21 May 1967) is a retired Israeli triple jumper, whose personal best was 17.20 meters, achieved in June 1992 in Seville. Nachum participated in three Olympic Games: Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 where he carried the Israeli flag at opening ceremony. At the 1989 Maccabiah Games, he won the triple jump in 55' 0 1/4", and was then recruited for Kansas State University by U.S. T&F coach Steve Miller.
