1999 IAAF World Indoor Championships
The 7th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics were held in the Green Dome Maebashi stadium in Maebashi, Japan from March 5 to March 7, 1999. It was the first time the Championships were staged outside Europe or North America. Primo Nebiolo, president of the IAAF, characterized the championships as "the greatest ever". There were a total number of 487 participating athletes from 115 countries. Doping disqualifications Four medalists were disqualified for doping; Rostislav Dimitrov of Bulgaria was stripped of the triple jump silver, Inger Miller of the USA was stripped of the 60 metre bronze, Vita Pavlysh of Ukraine was stripped of the shot put gold and Irina Korzhanenko of Russia was stripped of the shot put silver. Kazuhiro Takahashi (sprinter)
is a Japanese retired sprinter. He currently holds the Asian indoor record in the 4 × 400 metres relay with 3:05.90 minutes, achieved with teammates Jun Osakada, Masayoshi Kan and Shunji Karube in March 1999 in Maebashi. He also formerly held the Japanese record in the 200 metres with 20.57 seconds. He is currently (2020) the athletic director at Hamamatsu Koto High School. Bruno Wavelet (born 20 November 1974) is a French sprinter who specialized in the 400 metres. He was born in Dunkerque. He competed individually at the 1998 European Indoor Championships, the 2000 European Indoor Championships, and the 2001 Jeux de la Francophonie without reaching the final. He became French indoor champion in 1998. Competitors included Pierre-Marie Hilaire, Fred Mango and Marc Raquil. In the 4 x 400 metres relay he finished sixth at the 1999 World Indoor Championships did not finish the final at the 2000 European Indoor Championships, competed at the 2000 Olympic Games without reaching the final and won a bronze medal at the 2001 Mediterranean Games. Christophe Cheval (born 25 February 1971 in Somain, Nord) is a French sprinter who specialized in the 200 metres. Sanjay Claude Ayre (born 19 June 1980 in Kingston, Jamaica) is a retired Jamaican sprinter who specialized in the 400 meters. Ayre won a silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games. Ayre is a 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championship Gold medalist and a three-time World Outdoor Championship medalist.
