Pole Vault
Pole vaulting, also known as pole jumping, is a track and field event in which an athlete uses a long and flexible pole, usually made from fiberglass or carbon fiber, as an aid to jump over a bar. Pole jumping competitions were known to the Mycenaean Greeks, Minoan Greeks and Celts. It has been a full medal event at the Olympic Games since 1896 for men and since 2000 for women. It is typically classified as one of the four major jumping events in athletics, alongside the high jump, long jump and triple jump. It is unusual among track and field sports in that it requires a significant amount of specialised equipment in order to participate, even at a basic level. A number of elite pole vaulters have had backgrounds in gymnastics, including world record breakers Yelena Isinbayeva and Brian Sternberg, reflecting the similar physical attributes required for the sports. Denys Sergiyovich Yurchenko ( uk, Денис Сергійович Юрченко) (born 27 January 1978 in Donetsk) is a Ukrainian pole vaulter with three medals in Indoor Athletics Championships. Career At the 2000 Summer Olympics he suffered a mishap with a vaulting pole, injuring his groin and ending his season. He also initially won the bronze medal in the men's pole vault event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. On 17 November 2016, the IOC disqualified him from the 2008 Olympic Games, stripped his Olympic bronze medal and struck his results from the record for failing a drugs test in a re-analysis of his doping sample from 2008. Giuseppe "Peppe" Gibilisco (; born 5 January 1979) is an Italian coach and former pole vaulter, who won the 2003 World Championships with a personal best of 5.90 m. He followed this with a bronze medal in the 2004 Olympics. He also competed in four-man bobsleigh in two race of the 2016–17 Bobsleigh World Cup finishing 25th and 28th. He is the coach of the Italian pole vaulter Claudio Stecchi. Biography Giuseppe Gibilisco was born in Syracuse, Sicily. Štěpán Janáček (; born 12 June 1977 in Prague) is a Czech former pole vaulter. He finished eighth at the 2001 World Indoor Championships, second at the 2001 Summer Universiade and fifth at the 2002 European Championships. He also competed at the World Championships in 1999, 2001 and 2003 as well as the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games without reaching the finals. Rens Blom
Rens Blom (born 1 March 1977) is a Dutch retired athlete competing in pole vault. Life Blom was born in Munstergeleen. He achieved a vault of 5.75 as early as in 2000, but five years passed without much further progress. However, on 8 June 2004 in Zaragoza, he set the Dutch record with 5.81. In 2005, he consolidated his position by clearing 5.80 early in May. At the 2005 World Championships in Athletics, he once again achieved 5.80 and won the gold medal. It was the first Dutch gold medal at a World Championship. In addition, Blom has won five national championships and four national indoor championships. The year 2006 turned out to be a frustrating year for Blom, full of bad luck and injuries. Daniel "Danny" Ecker (born 21 July 1977 in Leverkusen) is a former German athlete competing in the pole vault. Biography His current personal best is 5.93 metres, but through his indoor best performance of 6.00 metres he has a place in the so-called 6 metres club. 5.93 ranks him fourth among German pole vaulters, behind Tim Lobinger, Andrei Tivontchik and Michael Stolle.
