1999 Copa América Group B
The Group B of the 1999 Copa América was one of the three groups of competing nations in the 1999 Copa América. It comprised Brazil national football team, Brazil, Chile national football team, Chile, Venezuela national football team, Venezuela, and Mexico national football team, Mexico. Group play began on June 30 and ended on July 6. Brazil won the group and faced Argentina national football team, Argentina, the runner-up of 1999 Copa América Group C, Group C, in the quarterfinals. Mexico finished second and faced Peru national football team, Peru, the runner-up of 1999 Copa América Group A, Group A, in the quarterfinals. The 1999 Copa América was a football tournament held in Paraguay, from 29 June to 18 July. It was organized by CONMEBOL, South America's football governing body. In order to bring the number of competing teams to twelve, CONMEBOL invited CONCACAF's Mexico, accepting their fourth invitation, and AFC's Japan, who made their debut at the tournament. Japan thus became the first country outside of Americas to participate at the Copa América. Uruguay fielded a youth team. Jorge Vargas (born 8 February 1976 in Santiago de Chile) is a Chilean football manager and former football defender. Club career Vargas debuted in his country's first division in 1995 while playing for Huachipato on loan from Universidad Católica. After returning from his loan spell Vargas received little playing time for Universidad Católica and was consequently loaned out during the 1997 season to Coquimbo Unido, where he began to make a name for himself with his solid play. His play did not go unnoticed by Universidad Católica as he returned to the club and began to feature regularly. Nelson Bonifacio Acosta López, nicknamed ''Pelado Acosta'' (''Bald'' Acosta), (born 12 June 1944 in Paso de los Toros, Uruguay) is a former Uruguayan-born Chilean football manager and footballer.
