1998 World Badminton Grand Prix Finals
The 1998 World Badminton Grand Prix was the 16th edition of the World Badminton Grand Prix finals. It was held in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei from February 24 to February 28, 1999. It did not take place in December as in the years before due to the collision with the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand. The prize money was USD300,000. The players were qualified according to the ranking on 1 December 1998. In men's singles the first 16 players were qualified, in women's singles the first 12 and in the doubles the first eight. Margit Borg, the number 13 in the women's singles rank, could participate because the Susi Susanti was pregnant. Bandar Seri Begawan
Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB; Jawi: بندر سري بڬاوان; ) is the capital city of Brunei. It is officially a municipal area () with an area of and an estimated population of 100,700 as of 2007. Dong Jiong (; born 20 August 1973) is a Chinese badminton player who ranked among the world's men's singles elite in the mid and late 1990s. Dai Yun (; born 22 November 1977) is a Chinese former badminton player. Career At the beginning of the century Dai was ranked among the world's leading women's singles players, most of whom were her fellow countrywomen. Her titles included the Chinese Taipei (1999), Malaysia (1999), Thailand (1999, 2003), and Swiss (2000) Opens. Mia Audina
Mia Audina Tjiptawan (born 22 August 1979) is a former Indonesian badminton player who represented Indonesia and later the Netherlands in international competitions. A badminton prodigy, Audina first played Uber Cup (the women's world team championship) for Indonesia at age fourteen, winning the decisive final match in the championship round against China in 1994. She was briefly ranked as the World No.1 women's singles player in October 1996. Audina helped Indonesia to retain the Uber Cup title in 1996, and was a member of the 1998 Indonesian team which relinquished the Cup to China, before moving to the Netherlands with her Dutch-national husband in 2000. Zhang Ning
Zhang Ning (; born 19 May 1975) is a former Chinese badminton player. She won the Olympic gold medal twice for women's singles in both 2004 and 2008. She has played badminton on the world scene since the mid-1990s and has been particularly successful since 2002 while in her late twenties and early thirties, relatively late for singles at the highest level, and especially for top players in the Chinese system who are developed very early. She is known for her consistency of shot, deception and constant pressure, dictating the pace of rallies and working her opponents in all four corners of the court. Zhou Mi (badminton)
Zhou Mi (; born 18 February 1979) is a Chinese badminton player. During much of her career she represented the People's Republic of China, but since 2007 she has represented Hong Kong which has a sports program and teams independent from those of the mainland. In 2010, she received a 2-year ban, for failing a drugs test. Career Since 1998 Zhou has won more than twenty international singles titles on the world circuit and has achieved number one world rankings at various times. Ye Zhaoying (; born 7 May 1974) is a retired badminton player from Hangzhou, China. Officially ranked as the number one women's singles player in the world for the first time in December 1995, she lost and regained that ranking several times during her career. Poul-Erik Høyer Larsen (born 20 September 1965) is the current President of the Badminton World Federation and a retired Danish badminton player who won major international singles titles in the 1990s, and ranks among Denmark's badminton greats.
