1998 Major League Soccer Season
The 1998 Major League Soccer season was the third season of Major League Soccer. Chicago Fire and Miami Fusion played their inaugural seasons as the first two MLS expansion teams. Chicago would become the first expansion team to win the MLS Cup and the first to win it in the inaugural year. Diego Serna
Diego Alonso Serna Lopera (born October 2, 1973) is a Colombian football player who last played for Miami Dade FC. He is the all-time leading scorer for the now-defunct Miami Fusion of Major League Soccer. Career Early Career, Major League Soccer Serna began his career in his native Colombia with Cortuluá and Independiente Medellín, before moving to MLS with the expansion Fusion in 1998. He became the one constant in Miami's lineup for the four years of the team's existence, leading them in goals in points his first three seasons with the club. Overall, he ended up with team records of 100 games, 52 goals, 36 assists, and 140 points in the regular season, and added a goal and an assist in six playoff games. In 2001, he was named to the MLS Best XI. The Fusion was contracted before the 2002 MLS season, so Serna was picked 4th overall in the 2002 MLS Allocation Draft by the MetroStars, who traded Mark Chung to obtain that pick. Leo Cullen (soccer)
Leo Cullen (born February 28, 1976 in Burnsville, Minnesota) is a retired American soccer defender who spent seven seasons in Major League Soccer and earned three caps with the United States men's national soccer team. Player Cullen played college soccer at the University of Maryland from 1994 to 1997. He was the 1997 ACC Player of the Year and a 1997 First-Team All-American. Professional On February 2, 1998, the Miami Fusion made Cullen the first draft pick in team history, taking him first overall in the 1998 MLS College Draft. Cullen spent the next three and a half seasons in Miami (he left the team as the club's all-time leader in games and minutes). Nelson Vargas
Nelson Vargas (born August 6, 1974) is an American former soccer player and coach. Vargas spent five seasons in Major League Soccer and earned four caps with the United States men's national soccer team. He was also a member of the U.S. soccer team at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Soccer Youth Vargas attended Miami Coral Park High School and played youth soccer with Inter Juventus in Miami. After high school, he chose to forgo college and moved to Europe to train with Valencienne in France and Sporting Club of Portugal. He signed his first professional contract at the age of 16 to play for Standard Liège in Belgium. John Maessner
John Maessner (born June 2, 1969 in Hackensack, New Jersey) who spent six seasons in Major League Soccer, two in France, two in USISL, two in the National Professional Soccer League and one in Germany. Player Youth Maessner was a 1987 Parade Magazine High School All American soccer player. In 1987, he entered the University of Virginia where he played on the men's soccer team until 1990. In 1989, the Cavaliers won the NCAA championship. He lost much of his senior season with a broken foot, but came back in time for the post-season tournaments. Hendrig "Henry" Gutierrez (born August 28, 1968 in Hoboken, New Jersey and raised in Miami) is an American former soccer player who began his career in the lower French divisions before finishing it in the United States. He was a member of the U.S. teams at the 1985 FIFA U-16 World Championship and the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship. He earned one cap with the United States men's national soccer team. Brian Hall (referee)
Brian Hall (born June 5, 1961) is an American former soccer referee from northern California. He started his professional career as an assistant referee in the NASL at age 19. Hall was a FIFA referee from 1992 until he retired in 2007 at the mandatory retirement age of 45. He refereed two games in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He was also named Major League Soccer Referee of the Year in 2003, 2005 2006, and 2007. Hall served as the US Soccer Manager of Referee Assessment and Training until 2010. Jaime Moreno (footballer, Born 1974)
Jaime Moreno Morales (born 19 January 1974) is a Bolivian former professional footballer now serving as Youth Academy Technical Training Coach for D.C. United in Major League Soccer, and as the head coach of D.C. United's U-23 side. Moreno began his career at Club Blooming and then played for Colombia's Independiente Santa Fe before spending two seasons at the English club Middlesbrough. The rest of his career was spent at D.C. United apart from one season at the New York MetroStars in 2003, and he was the all-time leading scorer in Major League Soccer at the time of his retirement in 2010.
