The 1998 Christchurch mayoral election was part of the New Zealand local elections of that year. Garry Moore of the centre-left Christchurch 2021 ticket was elected over thirteen other candidates, and replaced Vicki Buck Vicki Susan Buck (born 16 July 1955) is a New Zealand politician. Garry Moore (mayor)
Garry Anthony Moore (born 8 January 1951) is a former mayor of Christchurch, New Zealand, serving from 1998 to 2007. Subsequently, he was a board member of the NZ Transport Agency. He is a 'South Island enthusiast'. Early life Moore was born in Palmerston North in 1951 and received his schooling there. He trained as an accountant; first at Palmerston North Technical Institute and then at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology. He had come to Christchurch through his love for vintage cars; the Vintage Car Club was founded in the city and rural roads around Christchurch are ideal for excursions in old cars. He met his wife, Pam Sharpe, while they were both studying at Christchurch Polytechnic. They were married in 1977 and have two girls and two boys. In the 1980s, he was involved in several schemes helping unemployed people. Whale Watch Ltd in Kaikoura is one such company that he helped set up. The People's Choice (previously Christchurch 2021) is a centre-left political ticket that contests elections for the Christchurch City Council, and the Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) in Christchurch, New Zealand. History The People's Choice was founded as Christchurch 2021 to contest the 1992 local body elections after the amalgamation of several smaller councils into a larger Christchurch City Council in 1989, and brought under one umbrella Labour local candidates with independent centre-left and left. The ticket has an association with the New Zealand Labour Party, and although it has never run a mayoral candidate under its modern title, it tends to support centre-left mayors both on council and during election campaigns. Vicki Susan Buck (born 16 July 1955) is a New Zealand politician. She was Mayor of Christchurch for nine years from 1989 to 1998. She retired after three terms, having been very popular. She made a political comeback, standing in the 2013 local elections in the Riccarton-Wigram ward as councillor for Christchurch City Council, being returned with the highest number of votes across all city wards. She subsequently accepted the role of deputy mayor. Early life and family Buck was born on 16 July 1955, and educated at Christchurch Girls' High School. She went on to study at the University of Canterbury from 1972, graduating Bachelor of Arts in 1975 and Master of Arts with honours in political sciences in 1977. Garry Moore (born Thomas Garrison Morfit; January 31, 1915 – November 28, 1993) was an American entertainer, comedic personality, game show host, and humorist best known for his work in television. He began a long career with the CBS network starting in radio in 1937. Beginning in 1949 and through the mid-1970s, Moore was a television host on several variety and game shows. After dropping out of high school, Moore found success first as a radio host and later moved to the medium of television. He hosted several daytime and prime time programs titled ''The Garry Moore Show'', and the game shows ''I've Got a Secret'' and '' To Tell the Truth''. He was instrumental in furthering the career of comedic actress Carol Burnett. He became known early in his career for his bow ties and his crew cut fashion.
