The 1998 Australian Open was a tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts at Albert Park in Melbourne in Victoria in Australia. Nannie De Villiers
Nannie de Villiers (born Esmé de Villiers, 5 January 1976) is a former professional tennis player who represented South Africa. She was born in neighbouring Namibia but moved at a young age. De Villiers made her début in 1993, at the small ITF Johannesburg tournament. She also played her next event in her native country, in Pretoria, winning the doubles event. Although she officially retired in 2003, she made a minor-comeback in 2007, entering the Cape Town event, losing in the first round singles and reaching the semifinals doubles. Ludmila Varmužová (also known as Ludmilla Varmuza; born 25 February 1979) is a retired tennis player who represented the Czech Republic as well as San Marino during her career. As a junior, Varmužová appeared at the finals of all four Grand Slam girls' doubles events. Anna Smashnova ( he, אנה סמשנובה, russian: Анна Смашнова; born July 16, 1976) is a Soviet-born Israeli former tennis player. She retired from professional tour after Wimbledon 2007. Smashnova reached her career-high singles ranking of world No. 15 in 2003. She reached 13 finals, and won 12 of them. Raluca Sandu (born 3 February 1980) is a Romanian retired tennis player and professional padel player. On 18 January 1999, she reached her highest WTA singles ranking of 68 whilst her best doubles ranking was 228 on 13 September 1999. Raluca turned pro at the age of 15 and reached WTA top 100 by the time she was 17 years old. She was also ranked top 10 in the world ITF juniors ranking, reaching the semifinals at the 1995 US Open. Ginger Helgeson (born September 14, 1968) is a former American professional tennis player, who is considered to be perhaps the greatest player ever to come out of Minnesota. She reached her highest singles ranking on January 2, 1995, when she became the No. 29 in the world. In doubles, she reached No. 38 in the same year, on January 9. Tennis career Helgeson-Nielsen was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota, before moving to Edina after seventh grade. She was coached by her brother, Brace, throughout juniors and high school.
