1998 Australian Open – Women's Singles
Defending champion Martina Hingis defeated Conchita Martínez in the final, 6–3, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1998 Australian Open. This was the first Grand Slam (tennis)#Tournaments, major in which future world No. 1 and 23-time major singles champion Serena Williams competed in the main draw. She was defeated by Williams sisters rivalry, her sister Venus Williams, Venus in the second round. Nirupama Sanjeev, Nirupama Vaidyanathan became the first Indian woman in the Open Era to contest, and to win, a major singles match. Corina Maria Morariu (born January 26, 1978) is an American former professional tennis player. Morariu (pronounced: mo-RA-R'ju) was born in Detroit, Michigan and is of Romanian descent. She turned professional in 1994. Mainly known as a doubles specialist, she won the women's doubles title at Wimbledon in 1999 with Lindsay Davenport.
